This little book includes instructions on how to use the Cued Articulation system which is very useful to help children say particular speech sounds. The cues indicate the voicing, place and manner of the speech sound, therefore contrasting loud/quiet sounds (e.g. b/p) and long/short ones (s/t). There is a colour coding system which is used to provide extra visual information about the phoneme made by a letter or sequence of letters e.g. ph will be underlined the same as f to show it makes the same sound.
This book will be most useful to speech and language therapists and teachers who work with children who have difficulties producing speech sounds e.g. phonological delay/disorder, dyspraxia or dysarthria.

Phonics are being widely taught in schools at the moment to help in the teaching of spelling and reading. Some children find it difficult to sense or understand where sounds are being produced in their mouths. One common difficulty is the use of 'f' instead of 'th', e.g. 'fursday' instead of Thursday. Cued articulation is a number of small signs that can be taught alongside the phonemes to cue the child where the sounds come from in the mouth or throat.

I've used cued articulation in two special schools to teach phonics to children who have difficulties with speech. The children like it as often the sign helps them to remember letter/sound correspondence.
