Reviews

The late Freddie Garrity (of Freddie and the Dreamers) stars in this 1967 Eternal films comedy. Directed by Duncan Wood who produced ..Hancocks Half Hour.., …Steptoe and Son… and …Oh Brother... amongst many others. A good British cast, Kenneth Connor, Victor Maddern, John Le Mesurier and Arthur Mullard tell the story of a troop of scout misfits, ...The Cuckoo Troop.., led by Garrity on their way to scout camp and all the scrapes they stumble into!

The picture and soundtrack quality are very good. The film is in black and white.

Kenneth Connor and John Le Mesurier run a scout group. The Cuckoo Patrol is a group of scouts within the group, whose members are unable to do anything right. Despite their good intentions, they are precluded from almost everything, due to their utter ineptitude. They are therefore sent on a "mission", which involves taking a cartload of gear to a local railway station. They, of course, make a complete mess of this and things take a few "funny" turns.

The story is feeble, but that's all it was ever meant to be. It is harmless fun. It is a pity that both Kenneth Connor and John Le Mesurier really only play a supporting role; their talents are somewhat wasted, because the "stars" are Freddie and the Dreamers, who just behave like a bunch of over-grown schoolboys. I'm not sure how well the singing works with the film, but it is innocent enough.

I cannot give the film 5 stars, because it just doesn't deserve them. My rating is based on seeing so many British "greats" in one very second-rate film. If you collect these type of films, it's one for the collection. It has no actual merit in the storyline, but it isn't too contrived and is quite amusing.
