"'A fascinating story and a vivid picture of Britain in the 1940s.' The Times. 'The author has a wonderful gift for hanging a richly woven tapestry around an essentially simple frame.' Times Education Supplement."

Product Description

From the award-winning author of "Goodnight Mister Tom" comes the classic "Cuckoo in the Nest", packaged with a beautiful, fresh new cover.Amid the rubble of post-war Britain, Ralph is entranced by the theatre. He loves seeing the performances, talking to the actors, the buzz of the audience, and the corridors and dressing rooms backstage. But how can a working-class boy achieve his dream when there is no opportunity for theatre training? It will take great courage. "Cuckoo in the Nest" is the first of The Hollis Family books.

A Cuckoo in the Nest is a story based just after the second World War. It is about a sixteen year-old boy with a passion for the theatre. At first behind his sceptical father's back, and later with the full support of his family he does what it takes to acheive his dream of becoming an actor.
I enjoyed this book thouroughly, and would recommend it particularly for girls or boys aged between eleven and fifteen, and especially those who have an interest in theatre themselves, or who have enjoyed other books written by Michelle Magorian.

This moving and fascinating story gives a vivid image of Britain in the 1940s. A story of one boy's fight to reach his dream along with all the sacrifices and humiliations he must experience to get there. He suffers the humiliation of failure and the joys of success. A roller-coaster of emotions, this story takes the reader inside the head of the characters and as the story progresses the reader can familiarise more and more with the characters.

The title of the book makes the point of how much Ralph, the main character, stands out from the rest of his family. During the war he was evacuated to Cornwall where he stayed with an old vicar in a rectory. There he went to grammar school and earned himself a School Certificate. However when he arrives back home he finds that he is set apart from his family, he finds that he has lost his local accent and now speaks with what his father calls a "hoity-toity" accent. When his father returns from the army after the war is over, Ralph finds that he is still fighting a war against him. His father is prejudiced against Ralph because of his accent and his interest in the theatre, but no matter what his father or anyone else says he is determined to fulfil his dream and become an actor.

An exciting and emotional read which I especially recommend for young adults.

A Cuckoo in the Nest 21 April 2005
Format:Paperback
I really enjoyed this book. It is set in a post-war era and is based upon Ralph, a 17 year old highly ambitious boy who is determined to prove his father wrong. This is a book that I could read over and over again. The second book in the series is A Spoonful of Jam. It is based upon Ralph's sister and is equally as good. I would recommend both books, and, indeed all of Michelle Magorian's books to anyone and everyone, no matter what age or what interests they possess!
