5.0 out of 5 stars Better than the original, 26 Feb 2004
By A Customer
What can I say, this is an excellent film - subtle and
sophisticated. It is a perfect sequel to the first, and like a perfect sequel actually makes the first better to. The special effects aren't that expensive but their not bad and the hyperspace thing is pretty convincing. The best thing about this film though is that it has that grasp of subtle realities that puts it up there with the early Hellraiser films. This achieves exactly what Event Horizon tries and utterly fails to do.
The people in this film come face to face with the reality of hyperspace, a reality that most of us cannot accept, where they meet multiple realities and realities that conflict. At the end you still don't know the purpose of the Cube (other than to torture people), and its obvious that the first cube in the first film can be seen as a prototype for the second in the second. (OK I am into hyperspace and ftl geometry which makes me kind of prejudiced, and I'm not sure you'll even get the punch line or much of the film without the ability to grasp HS (hyperspace)).

Set in the same reality as the first Cube, in a world surrounded by an utterly merciless military that killls without thinking. A film that never needs to tell you everything or lead you by the hand, where the author leaves you some genuine sense of mystery.
My only warning is I don't know how many times you can repeat watch it, a problem with Donnie Darko to! Saying that this is definitely in my top ten films for the last ten years.
Really good

4.0 out of 5 stars Rubiks revenge!, 27 May 2004
By E. R. Evans - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
When I stumbled upon Cube in my local video store something made my buy it and boy I glad I did. You see Cube is a very clever movie, even down to the names of the characters, and who escapes at the end but it left me wanting more, and had many unsnswered questions.

So along comes Hypercube:Cube 2, not a good as the first as Cube is such a unique movie. The main problem I had with with Cube 2 was that I couldn't get on with the lead female character, she just seemed out of place, not poor acting but she just didn't look the part considering her role in the scheme of things, I felt that this part would have maybe better played by a male character just because of her reasons for being in there . With that aside, HyperCube:Cube2 sort of ties up some of the loose ends left at the end of the first movie, we don't get to see any of Cubes characters again though just answers to questions that the first left.

This time all the prisoners are all put in there for a reason notlike the first film where each had an individual skill that could be used to aid escape. The twist with this one however that is it's set in hyperspace therefore making the Cube itself unstable, so TIME is of the great importance to them and we do also get to see how the prisoners are transported there and a each has a bit of back story.

So if you liked the First then this is worth a look just to satisfy your curiosity......

3.0 out of 5 stars Cube 2 much, 26 Jan 2004
The original Cube was a great film - different, edgy and gripping. I'm afraid that the sequel just doesn't work, though it has nearly identical ingredients. The film tries to be too clever and modern, failing to use hyperspace, extra-dimensions or anything else in a way that would make sense. Its more like a bad-remake of the original, with an absolutely dire and unrelated ending that seems to have been tacked on without any thought. A bit of a shame, when you consider the quality of the original. The female lead makes the best of the poor script however.
