Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Some series of guidebooks give travel writing a bad name, but the Rough Guides isn't one of them. The new Cuba book exemplifies the genre and is a fantastic guide to one of the world's fastest growing tourist destinations. Like its competitors, the book is illustrated with some superb photographs and takes you through everything you need to know. The information is up-to-date--the new private bus service, only 6 months old, is comprehensively explained--and easy to assimilate.

What is most impressive about this book, however, is its scope. The authors seem equally adept at describing Havana's colonial architecture and the artefacts in its museums, the depredations of the sugar industry and the slave trade, the attractions of the sandy expanses of Varadero's beaches, and carnival time at Santiago de Cuba. There are also exhaustive sections on Cuban music--one of the best reasons to visit--Castro, Cuban literature, and the National Parks. The book has been written by people who clearly have a great deal of knowledge and empathy with their subject, rather than by a backpacker chalking up country number 87.

For some years now, visitors have been attracted to Cuba, not least by the possibility of glimpsing a culture which has not been completely subsumed under consumerism. It's hard to imagine a better guidebook for future visitors to have and, as the authors themselves make clear, the time to see this special side of Cuba is now rather than later. --Toby Green

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything you need to know is here !, 10 July 2001

This review is from: Cuba: The Rough Guide (Rough Guide Travel Guides) (Paperback)
Written primarily for the traveller wishing to discover the "real" Cuba. Not much for the package holiday tourist as both Varadero and Guardalavaca are barely touched upon (the former definately more than the latter however). Useful information on where to stay, eat, sights to see etc. Very well written and easy to follow. Concerntrates on "culture" rather than tourism.

5.0 out of 5 stars A dependable companion to a most interesting country!, 13 Feb 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Cuba: The Rough Guide (Rough Guide Travel Guides) (Paperback)
The Rough Guide to Cuba proved very useful on our recent trip. The maps and guides of what to do in Havana are excellent, without it we would have found it difficult to take in as much as we did in a short space of time. It is difficult to find good maps of the country whilst you are there so the map pages of the book were very handy.

The only thing that could be improved is the restaurant section, and I would recommend any Havana traveller to search out the splendid eating place reviews there are on the Web. The quality of a restaurant or paladar can change very quickly so a guidebook like this may not be the best place for an extensive list.

We thoroughly enjoyed our holiday to Cuba and I can definitely say that the Rough Guide made it a more interesting trip then it would have been without it's valued tips and recommendations.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not rough enough, 12 Nov 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Cuba: The Rough Guide (Rough Guide Travel Guides) (Paperback)
For a Change I thought I would buy a rough guide rather than the equivalent "lonely planet", however I was disapointed. Although fairly well researched, for the independent traveller this is one rough guide that just isn't rough enough - for example it does'nt mention any budget accomodation on Cayo Coco when there are infact 3 (A Motel, A Campismo and possible to stay at Sitio La Guira in a hut). Again I met some people in Vinales Valley following a trail in their Lonley Planet guide, of which the was no suggested trail in my Rough Guide. Sorry to be negative but I felt several times the lonley planet (which I found my self reading from fellow travellers) had the edge on my visit to Cuba. Next time I know which guide I'll be buying....
