Product Description

Product Description
War in Cuba isn't Ben Tyler's concern. Still, sailing mares and guns into Havana harbor in 1898 - right past the submerged wreckage of the U.S. battleship Maine - may not be the smartest thing the recently prison-sprung horse wrangler ever did. Neither is shooting one of the local Guardia, though the pompous peacock deserved it. Now Tyler's sitting tight in a vermin-infested Cuban stockade waiting to face a firing squad. But he's not dying until he gets the money he's owed from a two-timing American sugar baron. And there's one smart, pistol-hot lady at the rich man's side who could help Ben get everything he's got rightfully coming...even when the whole damn island's going straight to Hell.

4.0 out of 5 stars Elmore Leonard returns to his Grass Roots., 4 May 2009
By Bob Salter "Sandman" (Wiltshire, England) - See all my reviews
It was nice to see Elmore Leonard return to his grass roots with a good old fashioned Western. His very first success in 1951 was when Argosy published his short story "Trail of the Apache". My first acquaintance with him was reading his Western "Valdez is Coming", which was made into a film starring Burt Lancaster. Another well known Western "Hombre" starring Paul Newman was also based on one of his books.

This book is set 1n Cuba in 1898, at the time that the USS dreadnought Maine exploded mysteriously in Havana, sinking with great loss of life. This precipitated the Spanish/American war. So this was not a good time to arrive in Cuba, which is exactly what our hero Ben Tyler manages to do. Tyler is an ex con who has done time in Yuma by retrieving owed money in unorthodox fashion. He is a character who will call a spade a spade, and back that up with guns or fists. Both of which he is useful with. An old friend involves him in a horse trading, gun running expedition to Cuba. Things go badly wrong on their arrival. The Maine has been sunk and rumours are rife. There are a lot of very nasty Spanish soldiers and shadowy revolutionaries waiting for them. There is also an attractive headstrong woman, who Tyler becomes more than a little interested in. But she is the woman of a very powerful and dangerous character. Ben manages to find a place in the local prison from where he later escapes their brutal regime. He needs all his wits and his gun prowess to stay free and escape Cuba all in one piece.

The book does not demand too much of the reader. Like many Westerns you sit back and enjoy the ride. There is plenty of action and the setting of Cuba makes a refreshing change. I am sure Mr Leonard enjoyed a return to his familiar genre. It is no literary classic, but then it does not pretend to be one. An excellent and entertaining holiday read, which as it happens was when I read it.
