Reviews

2.0 out of 5 stars A chaotic mess, and not in a good way 12 Dec 2006
By Trevor Willsmer HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Richard Lester's Cuba was rushed into production with an unfinished script and more memorable for a troubled shoot that saw Sean Connery and Richard Lester at each others' throats than for anything that made it to the screen. Set in the last few days before Battista loses power, shown with such authentic period detail that no-one seems to remember it's supposed to be Christmas (the title card even gets the year wrong!), it's a plotless mosaic disinterestedly following Connery's mercenary supposedly advising the army but in fact doing nothing much in particular before falling in with old girlfriend Brooke Adams for a love story that doesn't really happen either before the revolution sort of happens because they've got to end the movie somehow. Then he goes home alone. Hector Elizondo's aide and Chris Sarandon's cheating husband are the closest the film gets to rounded characters but everyone else just phones it in.

The only extra is the original theatrical trailer.

3.0 out of 5 stars CUBA? WHY 13 April 2004
Format:DVD
This film is really not that good no wonder why it didn't do well at the box office. Sean connery was probably more interested in a big juicy pay check. This film was made in the 70s when most of connerys films were flops.
The big scottish star did actually say that the film was plagued with script problems with constant rewrites being done even while during filming. Even he said that he wish that he had tore it up.
Sean connery portrays a hard boiled english mercenery who is really hardly ever shown to his potential until the end when there is a big showdown with the cubans.
brooke adams is a very bad casting choice even though she is connerys love interest. she is more like a school girl who constantly keeps on changing her mind.
Look out for a very young Roger Lloyd pack ( trigger in only fools and horses ) as a cuban.

"I don't make many mistakes, but 'Cuba' was one of them," said Sir Sean Connery, a few years after this movie was released to mostly unfavourable reviews and terrible box-office. Even Richard Lester, its director, didn't seem too keen on it - he had an awful time making it, due to all kinds of unforeseen accidents (which led to unfortunate compromises with the storyline), and his once-strong relationship with Connery disintegrated to the point where Sir Sean stopped talking to him. Lester shrewdly noted that Connery "for the first time in his career [is] playing somebody who is weak, ineffective, incompetent, helpless with women, and with a terrible toupee" - no wonder he was uncomfortable, but a good part of the considerable pleasure of the film comes from the subtlety with which these aspects of the character are revealed. Connery's character has to learn quite a few things about himself, and about life, in the course of the story, which covers the very last days of the Batista dictatorship and ends with Fidel Castro's rebel army triumphantly entering Havana. We start off thinking he's another Connery tough guy, but he's revealed as achingly human - a man who's gone through life with a succession of false images of the world to protect him from harsh reality. The "great love affair" he briefly enjoyed with a Cuban girl during the war (the memory of which has sustained him ever since) is revealed as having been, for her, merely a fling to be enjoyed and forgotten; the "democratically-elected government" he has sworn to defend in Havana is swiftly found to be a brutal, corrupt tyranny; and he is left "sitting here bloody well disgusted", as he puts it.... 3.0 out of 5 stars cuba 9 April 2004
Format:DVD
Cuba has a good storyline but goes at a very slow pace. There is really not a lot of action in this film other than when they go out hunting and at the end. What you really have is a tale of romance which focuses more on the scenery then character development. Sean Connery is not really used to his full potential in this film but he said himself that after reading the script he near enough tore the whole thing up. Brooke Adams acting is wooden and makes it look like connery is in love with a school girl. All in all this is not one of Connerys best films.
