Product Description

CD Description
'Crystal Visions' is a collection of songs that spans threedecades worth of work by solo artist and former Fleetwood Mac member Stevie Nicks. The album includes remastered and live versions of tracks that weren't included on 1991's best of 'Timespace'. Classic hits such as 'Edge Of Seventeen', 'Stand Back', 'Dreams'and a raucous live version of Led Zeppelin's 'Rock And Roll'all feature. A comprehensive and endearing overview of Nick's work. This is a must for all Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars A perfect package, 26 Aug 2007
By L. HALLS (North London, U.K.) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a very good package. First of all, you get a lot of music for your money; 16 carefully chosen tracks on the CD and 13 videos with commentary and documentary on the DVD. Secondly, the music you do get is very high quality and is an absolute representation of Stevie Nicks' career down to a tee; there is nothing left out, nothing missed, and everything flows extremely pleasingly.

Those are the practicalities! There is a lot more to this CD & DVD though, and I feel it is necessary to dispell some of the inaccuracies in prior reviews. This CD does indeed contain a large amount of the same material on 'TimeSpace - The Very Best of Stevie Nicks', but 7 of the 16 tracks on 'Crystal Visions' are not to be found on 'TimeSpace' at all, not to mention the fact that a further 4 are live versions which prove that this is not simply a rehash of studio versions you can get just anywhere. In fact, I felt it was evident that Stevie has actually spent a little time finding different cuts, live versions, and an interesting track order which is far more interesting than the stolid chronological orders of other Greatest Hits packages I've bought.

As for specifics, the CD has a mixture of Fleetwood Mac tracks and solo tracks which makes this a truly "definitive" version of Stevie's career, and includes two tracks from her 2001 album 'Trouble in Shangri-La' which gives this a fresh vibe that none of her other retrospectives can offer as they all came out before that year, and makes 1991's 'TimeSpace' look somewhat dated (and the cover a fright!). The live tracks were all recorded since 2005 and two with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in Australia in 2006, which once again serves to show you a piece of what Stevie is still doing to this day; the closing "Edge of Seventeen" is spectacular with the violins and trumpets! And it is absolutely ridiculous for anyone to say you can barely hear it - you most certainly can and I was taken aback by how evident it is after having read these other inaccurate reviews.

The DVD of music videos contains some humour as Stevie talks you through some of the 80s atrocities and outfits, with little stories here and there about what was going on behind the scenes. I've never seen anyone do a personal commentary like this and it's definitely a nice touch and it's nice to see she doesn't take it all too seriously; you'll enjoy looking at how she's changed over the years and seeing all the different phases of her career up to the more polished newer videos. Nothing ground-breaking admittedly, but a nice touch.

This package is worth the money! If you're mildly interested in Stevie Nicks or Fleetwood Mac or new to her music, this is a wonderful package for you to enjoy! If you're a big fan already then there won't be much new for you but as it's a Very Best Of then I'm not entirely sure what some of you are expecting. The Live versions are worth it for me personally, and overall it's simply a tasteful, energetic, well crafted and enjoyable listen!

3.0 out of 5 stars As my old teacher used to say..."could do better", 5 Jul 2007
By WelshJoanne 007 (South Wales, UK) - See all my reviews
Now, don't get me wrong I'm a great fan of Stevie Nicks work both solo and with Fleetwood Mac which is probably why I find it so dissapointing that this is just another re-hashed "greatest hits" album.

If you are that much of a fan then you will probably have all (or most) of her albums including the excellent Enchanted box set which features the majority of these songs (give or take the odd one or two).

I find it frustrating and annoying that such a brilliant and talented singer/songwriter just cannot seem bothered to make a new fresh album which her fans would snap up in an instant. Instead she seems content to rest on her laurels and cash in on her past success again and again and again......Alas, not very rock and roll Stevie.

Anyway, don't rush out and buy this album - no doubt it will be available at your nearest Woolworths bargain bin within the not too distant future at the bargain price of £3.99.

2.0 out of 5 stars The Future is Grey, 24 April 2007
By standbackuk (Scotland UK) - See all my reviews
As a long time established Stevie Nicks fan lets just say that whilst you get a good looking booklet and some fancy photos, all that stands in this product is a long list of songs and the accompanying videos which were released internationally. Certainly if you have not heard of Stevie's solo career, this could perhaps be a good album to consider trying.

However for serious fans apart from some new versions of songs such as a tidied up version of Fleetwood Mac's contributed Stevie Nicks song, "Silver Springs," and the live renditions of "Landslide," and "Edge of Seventeen," there really isn't anything worth getting this CD/DVD combined product unless you want to collect all your recordings of songs and put it into a commercial release.

Frankly the videos here can be seen on Youtube, they are able to be purchased on video format but the DVD inclusive disk is by far the better bonus of the package with a great section of private home footage in recording studios - if you want to view song videos at your own pleasure. If you dont, again you can see these on You Tube.

However apart from running commentaries from Stevie in what all the videos are about you won't get to see the original commercial released video of Edge of Seventeen, which I feel is an unbelievable omission and you don't get to see Stevie talking about any of the videos just a running commentary. Sure there are very short parts of Stevie out of her domain in the studio to allow fans and the viewer to see Stevie Nicks as the person but at times in her career such as 1981's Bella Donna album period, not the present day; which isn't good for any viewer who wants to personally connect to rest of the body with the voice talking.

The music is slightly if not more disappointing; the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra can barely be heard through the two songs featured, with perhaps more orchestral parts blending in better and heard in "Landslide," whilst "Edge of Seventeen" just doesn't seem to sound right with an orchestra trying to keep up; the brass at the end for example are out of tune and over blowing; never a good sign for a professional orchestra and at nine minutes long you'll either appreciate of the extended lyrics Stevie pours into the microphone or tire of it . Add in the fact that Stevie is now approaching her older years and as a result will sing high up in commercial albums such as "Trouble in Shangri-La," but on here with recent performances, remains to stick to the lower and middle part of her voice, with less of the rock style that she is known for and becoming too wispy too early on. I'm disappointed that "Stand Back," hasn't been included on here and that would have been interesting to hear the difference with Stevie's version of her own song with an orchestra behind it compared to Rod Stewart's cover version in the late 1990's which features a well thought out Orchestra which heightens that song's cover feature.

But if there is anything which is as disappointing to this album, its the fact that this will now be Stevie's third released Greatest hits package even "The Divine Stevie Nicks," was never officially released by her.

So its a poor show without the DVD, but with it it makes an idea gift for anyone who is starting out on the trail of Stevie Nicks. But for the more serious fan looking for the songs that weren't featured on "Enchanted." You won't find them here. And for the price I'm afraid that this product overall is just too overpriced for what it features regardless of the videos featured.
