Ideal for girls who like fairies, 15 Jun 2005
Crystal the Snow Fairy is the first of the Weather Fairies series, featuring the girls Rachel and Kirsty who previously appeared in the Rainbow Fairies series (Ruby the Red Fairy, etc.) The Party Fairies series follows the Weather Fairies. The Weather Fairies series consists of the following books in order: Crystal the Snow Fairy, Abigail the Breeze Fairy, Pearl the Cloud Fairy, Goldie the Sunshine Fairy, Evie the Mist Fairy, Storm the Lightning Fairy, Hayley the Rain Fairy. In Crystal the Snow Fairy, Rachel goes to stay with her friend Kirsty for the holidays. The two girls are called to Fairyland to help retrieve seven magic feathers which evil Jack Frost has stolen, and which control the weather. In each book, one of the Weather Fairies appears to help the girls defeat Jack Frost's goblins, battle with the unseasonable weather, and restore the feather to its proper owner. Each book in this series can stand alone, but they are best read in order, starting with the Rainbow Fairies. The book is divided into 6 chapters of about 10-12 pages each, and is just right for children who are starting to read 'proper' paperbacks for themselves. Most pages are illustrated with a black and white line drawing which corresponds satisfyingly with the text. The cover is illustrated with a colourful picture of the featured fairy with silvery highlights. Adults may find the stories predictable, simplistic, and a bit twee, but girls aged about 7-8 enjoy them, especially the idea of collecting the complete set - so if you buy one of these books, be prepared to invest in the whole series!
