The original "Crystal Silence" disc was recorded in 1979 and, although the "Penguin Guide to Jazz on CD" awards it 3 stars (a very commendable rating), it seems to have passed into obscurity without much protest. This new disc is much more substantial, though, and offers a very satisfying listen. The album has grown to cover two discs, but they are very different entities, the first presenting Corea and Burton in concert with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the second allowing the two men the freedom of just their own company of solo piano and vibraphone.

Some reviewers have expressed a marked dislike for the orchestral arrangements on disc 1, but Tim Garland (known to many in the UK as an excellent saxophonist) has crafted some extraordinary music here. The writing is intelligent, sophisticated and never schmaltzy, and Corea and Burton respond with energy and imagination. On the duo disc they are of course able to take more liberties, but it should not be seen as the "jazzier" of the two discs. It is a different project, and the men play differently.

In all, this is a substantial, very enjoyable album that you would be well advised to add to your collection.
