3.0 out of 5 stars Descriptive if wandering narrative, 16 Mar 1999
By A Customer
This book describes in detail not only Messner's first solo ascent of Mt. Everest but the trip through Tibet and the effects of Chinese rule on the countryside and peoples. Good points :- good background info on earlier solo attempts and British attempts in the 20's, nice b/w photo's of Tibetan people, interesting counterpoints by companion on his attitude to mountineering / other people. Bad points :- Too much self analysis and attempts to explain reason to be. In summary not as gung ho or exciting as other accounts of dramatic Everest ascents, but a nice counterpoint.

4.0 out of 5 stars Much more than a book on alpinism, 27 Dec 2008
By Foxylock (Ireland) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
I found this book to be an enjoyable read. Reinhold Messner is a legend of mountaineering and has conquered more or less every peak on the planet worth climbing. But this book gives us much more than just another epic mountaineering tale, we get a look into the rich history of Tibet and its people and the struggle with China.

But the most amazing part of this book is the successful summit attempt itself, not only was it accomplished solo but without the use of supplemental oxygen. An unbelievable feat of human endurance and determination considering the support networks put in place by the commercial teams of today, some who boast at being able to put anyone on top of Everest.

The excerpts from Nenas diary give us a critical insight into Messner the man, the mood swings the dogmatism and the general supercilious nature of this climbing machine. Anyone interested in a no B.S. account of Himalayan climbing should definitely read this .

5.0 out of 5 stars For some a climb up Snowdon is enough, 17 Jun 2009
By Mr. P. J. R. LEWIS (Llandudno N Wales) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
There are few who would argue that the Austrian member of Parliament Reinhold Messner is and will remain prabably the greatest ever mountaineer.

He made alpine climbing what it is today and was the first of a very select group of climbers (British climber Alan Hinkes included)who have climbed all 14 8000m mountains with Mt Everest being the tallest of them all.

Most of us would settle on a solo climb up one of Britains popular peaks prabably Snowdon or some lakeland fell but Messner is no ordinary climber.

Very few climbers even today would contemplate a totally solo unsupported climb of Mt Everest climbing Alpine style ie with only the very basic equipment and scaling the mountain at speed.

Incredibly during his push to the summit from Camp 4 at around 28,000ft he even left his rucsac and climbing equipment behind in his tent only carrying his ice axe and Leica camera to the top of the world and using no suplimentary oxygen.

This is a climber so supream in his skill at high altitude mountaineering that he felt confident enough to attempt a summit bid with no protection other than what he stood up in.If he fell which he did twice it could prove fatal as there was no one there to come to his aid.

Messner in this magnificent book tells us about this epic adventure and just to prove he did it he carried his Lica camera and mini tripod and photographed himself on the summit in that now famous shot showing him in that blue duvet with his main sponsors logo Fila in centre spot.

Only Messner would have the audacity to attempt such a stunt if that is what you could call it but to climb to above 29,000ft totally alone without any support if something goes wrong takes a great deal of courage and skill.

This book is beautifully illustrated and expertly written to make a solo attempt on the worlds highest mountain almost appear common place.

Akita Namura the famous Japanese climber was going to attempt such a solo climb but Messner beat him to it.

This is a fascinating book which gives an insight into the character of a truly remarkable person. Messner is a complex phenomenon; he can be moody, introverted and morose but he... Read more
