Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Alfie, whose back catalogue stands as a bastion of dependable, solid, likeable and above all listenable (not something many of their contemporaries can claim), are a band who can charm you or break your heart, often simultaneously. They know that you don’t have to parade around in satin, playing ‘heroic’ guitar solos to be triumphant. The lack of dead wood in their songs is a testament to natural talent, and a keen sense of how to make great pop records.

From the cover art on down, "Crying At Teatime" encapsulates everything Alfie have been doing right so far, and then sets the bar even higher. Opener "Your Own Religion" is perfect, energetic summery pop, but its’ crown is immediately stolen by "Look At You Now". This lasts all of one song, before the title track takes the crown, and then… you get the idea. It wouldn’t be far off the mark to say that this is a quality album. Ten tracks of good, solid guitar rock, with Lee Gordon’s wistful vocal performance a good counterpoint to what would be bombastic in lesser hands. Grandiose, enjoyable and most importantly catchy, this is great stuff. --Thom Allott

CD Description
'Crying At Teatime' is the fourth album by the Mancunian indie rockers Alfie. Electing to take a more straight-ahead pop direction than shown on previous efforts, 'Crying At Teatime' is an excellent showcase of the bands songwriting skills, and is their most complete album to date. Includes the single 'Your Own Religion'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cool crying anytime, 15 Sep 2005
Crying at Teatime is a really cool album. It's impossible to choose a favourite track - they are all great songs and there isn't a single bad one. Their musical style ranges from quite heavy to the more traditional numbers, but Alfie are always innovative and their instrumental brilliance is superb.

I started trying to describe the tracks but gave up - frankly you just have to hear this album yourself to discover how good it is.

If you are after songs to sing along to and some uplifting tunes, then Crying at Teatime has it all. Alfie deliver beautiful heartfelt harmonies - one of their trademarks since their early days and one which stands them above the less ambitious and rather predictable bands around at the moment.

Amazon reviewer Thom Allott is spot on - it is great stuff, Alfie have produced one of the best UK albums this year. It is a "must buy" album which matches their live performances (and if you haven't seen Alfie live then you really are missing out....)

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Alfie masterpiece, 13 Sep 2005
By ORC "ORC" (England) - See all my reviews
Absolutely brilliant album - all 10 tracks are memorable for all the right reasons. Alfie have musically moved on yet again with "Crying at Teatime". Their last album "Do you imagine things" was also a favourite cd of mine and I expected this would've been hard to follow. Needn't have worried, with the tracks like "Where did our loving go?", "'til the end", "Applecart", "Look at you now", "Colours" you get the subtle, moody, Alfie - fantastic melodies.

"Wizzo" has the classic Alfie stamp - a catchy classy arrangement with cello, brass and a more mellow style that few bands would attempt, let alone bring off. "Kitsune" the last track starts as a haunting, simple tune but builds to a rich crescendo demonstrating all of Alfie's musical talents.

With the title track "Crying at teatime", "Your own religion" and "All too heavy now" you've got the fuller, gutsy tracks. A great selection - this is a real quality album, definitely 5 stars!
