Reviews

From director Ryoo Seung-wan (Arahan; No Blood No Tears; Die Bad), Korea's answer to Quentin Tarantino, comes the extraordinary Crying Fist, a gritty and violent, yet deeply inspirational tale of two boxers that turns the boxing film genre completely on its head. Internationally acclaimed-actor Choi Min-sik (Old Boy) and versatile actor Ryoo Seung-beom are mesmerizing as two desperate men forced into the boxing ring where, ultimately, each will fight for a better destiny. Based upon the two true stories of real-life fighters, Hareruya Akira and Seo-Cho (often referred to as "Korea's Tyson"), Ryoo Seung-beom combines their separate tales into one personal epic of fate and the courage to fight back against the odds.

Two Koreans; a non too bright ex~amateur, boxing silver medalist, who has lost all his money and respect, and a petty criminal who had neither to begin with, eventually end up going toe to toe after they enter an amateur boxing competition to redeem their loserish ways..
A typical boxing drama with plenty of depressing, heavy handed, Korean melodrama. The acting is well done and I have a difference of opinion with the other reviewer of this, in that I thought the boxing and fight choreography was handled quite well and was much more realistic than the early Rocky films.
There is some humour, however I would say it is probably overly long, at 2 hours, without enough boxing in it for my tastes. The action is reasonably brutal but I think I would have preferred a little more training and fisticuffs. Albeit I did have a good laugh during one scene, when a huge cube of stones squashed some bloke flat! No joke!
In the end I was entertained enough and for the very small amount I paid for this double disc I was more than happy.
Those of you who wish to see a well crafted boxing drama (think maybe The Fighter) could do a lot worse, however those of you expecting another Rocky 4 had better look elsewhere!
The two disc coll. ed. features a sharp print (albeit its got that weird, sterile, Korean look to it), and the extras include a commentary, making of, interviews, featurettes and deleted scenes.
For what it is, it's undeniably well done and you could easily add an extra star to my review if you caught it in the right frame of mind.. 3.5/5

Crying Fist is an ok boxing movie from the director of Arahan and City of Violence. Popular Korean actors Choi Min-Sik(Old Boy) and Ryu Seung-Beom(Arahan) star as two down and outs whose last hope for salvation is an up coming boxing tournament. Thier paths finally cross when they meet in the final.

The actual boxing in this movie is similair to Rocky, particularly from Ryu Seung-Beom who just doesn't convince as a boxer. Choi Min-Sik on the other hand, as displayed in Old Boy, looks very handy with his fists. Both actors and the supporting cast turn in great performances and the dialogue is rarely cheesy. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for the score which is often so cheesy as to undermine the films dramatic moments. The films main problem is it's lack of originality. This story is just a rehash of a thousand boxing films that have came before it. For this reason Crying Fist could only ever be worth three stars. I suggest you rent this instead of buying it.

Ryu Seung-Wan's other film, City of Violence, is fantastic and definately worth buying.
