Crying Fist is an ok boxing movie from the director of Arahan and City of Violence. Popular Korean actors Choi Min-Sik(Old Boy) and Ryu Seung-Beom(Arahan) star as two down and outs whose last hope for salvation is an up coming boxing tournament. Thier paths finally cross when they meet in the final.
The actual boxing in this movie is similair to Rocky, particularly from Ryu Seung-Beom who just doesn't convince as a boxer. Choi Min-Sik on the other hand, as displayed in Old Boy, looks very handy with his fists. Both actors and the supporting cast turn in great performances and the dialogue is rarely cheesy. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for the score which is often so cheesy as to undermine the films dramatic moments. The films main problem is it's lack of originality. This story is just a rehash of a thousand boxing films that have came before it. For this reason Crying Fist could only ever be worth three stars. I suggest you rent this instead of buying it. Ryu Seung-Wan's other film, City of Violence, is fantastic and definately worth buying.
