4.0 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too 23 Sep 2011
By TeensReadToo TOP 100 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
The small town of Cryer's Cross, Montana, has had a rough year. A sophomore girl from the lone school has disappeared, and no one knows what happened. And then, another student goes missing.

Kendall loves her home; however, she can't help but want more. The second person to disappear is her best friend and boyfriend, Nico. Kendall is desperate to find out what happened. She notices new graffiti on the desk that Nico sat in at school, and where the sophomore girl sat, as well. Determined to find her boyfriend, she comes across a history that is disturbing.

Kendall must put all of the pieces together to solve the mystery.

CRYER'S CROSS started off pretty slow, with not much happening. It actually slowed me down on the reading for quite a while. But once the middle of the story hit, things really started picking up speed, and there was just this intense storyline coming out. It was fantastic. I couldn't put the book down - I had to know what was going to happen. I didn't expect the twist that showed up, so I was very surprised. It was a pretty great story, and I loved the ending. I definitely think others will enjoy this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quality writing! 1 Aug 2011
By Laura
Format:Audio Download
I like long and detailed narratives which are rich in detail and subtlety. As well as that, I'm cheap and I like value for my money! If I can get a huge doorstop of a book or a featherweight paperback for the same price, then I'll probably be drawn to the longer read just for value's sake! Therefore, I usually go for audiobooks which are fairly lengthy.

At the end of last month, however, my darling dearest gave me the complete set of Harry Potter audiobooks, read by Stephen Fry! That is a total of 124 hours and 56 minutes of tremendous storytelling. I was beyond delighted with the present, yet knew that it was going to dramatically reduce the number of book reviews I'd be able to do this month as I would be absorbed in one of my old favourites. Thinking that I'd be able to read a few shorter books in between terms at Hogwarts, I opted to get Cryer's Cross with this month's Audible credit.

I can hardly believe how much Lisa McMann managed to squeeze into 5 hours and 27 minutes! Kendall is an interesting character who struggles with the events unfolding in her life. Her OCD is dealt with in an interesting way, though I thought at times that it was a little too "easy" for her. Much more conflict was produced by her developing feelings for the cold and brooding Jacian. She has to struggle with how he makes her feel and fight the temptations aroused by these feelings while she's still unsure of what has happened to her more fraternal boyfriend, Nico. I thought McMann dealt with this powerfully. I don't think I've ever wished a good guy would end up dead so that the love between two other characters could blossom! I felt bad for wishing it and Kendall, the protagonist, felt bad too! This created a lot of empathy which held me firmly gripped.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping, well-written novel 3 April 2013
By mpask
Format:Paperback
I am 15 years old and I am not usually a big fan of thriller/horror books but this book got me gripped from the start to the end.
I wouldn't say it was too horror ( I get scared easily, so that's good) but it's defiantly a murder mystery who leaves you completly clueless until the end.
The characters are easy to fall in love with and the story was genius. The deaths of the two local children and how a girl with OCD manages to help obtain the mystery with a help of a troubled new boy is a great idea.
After reading this book, I felt sort of haunted in a good way, sort of stunned!
If you chose any book, I recommend this one :)

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW 18 Feb 2011
By Jodzie
Format:Hardcover
I had seen lots of very positive reviews on this book but it still didn't grab me as a must read. To be honest l read it next because l only had 8 days left to read it and it's a short story (240 ish pages). BUT l am VERY glad l read this and chose to read it next!!! Wow.
From the start this book is very interesting because of Kendall and how much of a unique character she is, she suffers from OCD which plays a big part in this story and is brought up a lot in the book and follows her struggle. Also because she lives in a small town it makes for very interesting relationships with characters, how these change as the story goes on and the things which she comes to realise about her relationships with people around her (Explained below but it's a spoiler!). I did really like Kendall, l thought she was a very normal girl who l would get on with myself if she was a real person. She pretty much kept herself to herself and enjoyed doing normal things.
I had been told this was a creepy book and l am a bit of a wimp so l was scared l wouldn't enjoy it as it would freak me out too much but being honest, if you read this in the day you will be fine! Yes it's creepy but in the good way which keeps your heart beating fast and desperate to find out more! It's definitely one of those books where you wish you could skip a few lines or read faster just to find out what's going to happen!
With a book which is built up so much around one thing and finding out about the one thing, eg who is causing something, the answer to your BIG and main/only question throughout the whole book has to be a good one. I have read a few books which are so intriguing but when you read the end its kinda like, Oh. Is that it? This WASN'T one of those books!
