Product Description

Product Description

The next book from the number one bestselling author of Cry Silent Tears.

Joe was only five years old when he lost his voice. Only five years old when he was first beaten by his mother and raped by her boyfriend. And only nine years old when his mother sold him to a paedophile ring.

At sixteen, Joe finally found the courage to escape and headed for Charing Cross station with no money in his pocket, no friends and nowhere to turn to. But the nightmare was far from over.

Haunted by his harrowing past, Joe's life spiralled out of control. Living on the lonely streets of London, Joe turned down a dark path of crime and self-destruction and it seemed that he was bound for prison. Until the love of a good woman set him free…

This is the ultimate story of triumph over evil, of survival and redemption. Heartbreaking, but unbelievably inspiring, it is a testament to the unbreakable resilience of a little boy who grew up into a remarkable man. Now that he has found his voice again, Joe speaks out against child abuse and helps support and protect other children whose lives have been blighted by it.

About the Author

Now thirty four years old, Joe Peters survived a horrific childhood to bring up five children of his own, some of whom had special needs. He has set up a service on the internet to help children like himself to find assistance and is a spokesman on behalf of all abused children, particularly those who fall into the hands of the organised criminals who create internet pornography.

My Second Book 30 April 2010
Format:Paperback
I would like to thank everybody that has rated this book and my first book Cry Silent Tears, good or bad. I would like to state that Cry Myself to Sleep is not the same as the first, in fact Cry Myself to Sleep is the next stage in my life, from 16 to the present day and shows you what a rollercoaster path I had to take to deal with my childhood past.

Simply Inspiring 8 Jun 2009
Format:Paperback
This book envoked every emotion possible in me. Never before have I been drawn into a book the way I was drawn into this one, feeling almost as if I were right there with Joe by his side experiencing his pain.

It takes a great deal of courage to recall events such as the ones described in this book (and his previous book "Cry Silent Tears") and even more courage to share them with the world. I commend Joe for raising awareness of the horrors of child abuse in this way, as it could not have been easy by any means.

Despite feeling distressed at times I could not put this book down. I felt immense relief to find that there was a light at the end of the tunnel in the epilogue of this book, showing that even those who have lived in dark times can emerge out of the other side and go on to become great people.

This book is definately not for the faint hearted. The shame, sorrow, anguish and pain is not hidden in any way, shape or form and Joe has worn his heart on his sleeve, being brutally honest about the most disgraceful acts he was subjected to. The way Joe talks about the loss of his child, loved one and attemts to take his own life is simply heartbreaking.

To know that a man has suffered all of these things in his childhood and young adult life and still manage to go on living, find love again and have a loving family is simply inspirational. If you don't shed a tear reading this book I can only assume your heart is made of stone!
Well done Joe, keep up the good work!

A shocking yet breathtaking read, full of emotion that will have you gripped from cover to cover. Highly Recommended.

I had been waiting for the follow up to Cry Silent Tears for a while, and I finished reading it in 3-5 hours. The first 15 pages serve as a summary of the first book which you really need to read independently. Then the story continues as the author relates his move to London, southern England and Wales.

Sadly, the subtitle of the book is indirectly misleading as the author does get hurt again with a second direct bereavement which is described in the book (the other one got cut) and in echoes of Mark Johnson's Wasted, Peters had to learn to survive when homeless and face more tragedy alongside brushes with both criminals and the police - facing equal violence from both and at a younger age than Johnson.

Peters' evil mother only really gets a few sentences out of the whole book near the end, the rest is all about Joe, however due to editing restraints and resembling The Nipper by Charlie Mitchell, the overseas getaway and the meeting of his wife is rather truncated to the end of the book (or maybe I was reading it so quickly that it just felt shorter).

There's also some limited resolution relating to events from the first book, but it's good that overall Cry Myself To Sleep is more about the next stage in Joe's life rather than any major familial influence, as he gradually takes control after many more scraps and scrapes that see him near death at one point. It's good to know that various homelessness agencies of London and the probation system in general did just a little bit more to help the author at the time than social services ever did. It's also ironic that the author wanted to move on from his past and at times, the state agencies were the ones wanting to drag over every single detail of the past- normally the opposite is true.

The kid on the cover is not irritatingly cute, though it's a shame the publishers went straight for broke with a paperback launch. Many further details had to be cut from this book that would have been interesting to read so hopefully the publishers will be satisfied enough with the sales of this one to release an expanded second edition, or a third book to make the story completely rounded.

Also, (and I do not work for Amazon!) next time or with any further copies of the book I'll buy this from Amazon just to ensure that I've got it and it's on the way to me quickly, because none of the retail outlets I visited, stocked the book on its launch day or the day after. Whatever the reason for this, thankfully there was another solution that ensured I had the book in time for the bank holiday weekend.

Cry Myself To Sleep feels shorter than the first book's hardback edition, despite the similar page count but this is in part due to the better writing from Peters - maybe you won't blaze through it at a crazy pace like I did, but if you read the first then it's a natural step to read what happened next. As before, check the author's site for more information and hopefully the author's health will improve now that the book is out.
