Product Description

Synopsis

Margaret Crosland's definitive biography sheds new light on the phenomenon that was Piaf, enlarging on and in some cases correcting the half-truths provided by Piaf in her two autobiographies. Piaf's rise to international stardom, her lifelong addiction to alcohol and heroin, and her turbulent love affairs are documented, as are her friendships with such stars as Jean Cocteau, Marlene Dietrich, Maurice Chevalier, Yves Montand and Charlie Chaplin. Crosland concludes with a moving description of Piaf's early death at the age of 47, when some two million fans followed the funeral procession to Pere Lachaise cemetery.

A Cry from the Heart: The Biography of Edith Piaf by Margaret Crosland

Where to start? I don't know why Margaret Crosland bothered to write this book. It is obvious that she hates her subject, Edith Piaf. It is so badly written, inaccurately researched, and so boring, it took me far too long to have wasted my time on this book. There is bitterness in this book, I don't understand why Crosland took on a subject which repelled her. i can't write more than this on a book originally published in the 1980's,
and which should have stayed there. I am just sorry that Piaf has been so maligned. She doesn't deserve it.

The best book of all the contemporary biographies of Piaf is David Bret's. Not much new here after Bret.

If you're smart, you'll save your money and skip this book. I have long been a fan of Edith Piaf and eagerly dove into this book, hoping to learn something more about the life of this Paris legend. Instead, I learned quickly how boring an author can be while still soldiering on and attempting to tell a story .... in this case, the story of a very interesting woman. Because of my infatuation with Piaf, I was willing to continue on but had to give it up half way through out of sheer boredom with the writer's style and utter lack of sparkle. It was freeing to dump this one in the Goodwill bin. Probably would have been kinder to dump it in the trash.
