Product Description
The story of two feuding families - the Mackintoshes, wealthy Scottish landowners, and the Duffys, poor Irish labourers, and their attempts to tame the wilds of Northern Australia.

From the Author
The Sequels Shadow of the Osprey and Flight of the Eagle
I was warmed by the wonderful comments from my readers in the UK on your site. The second and third books in the trilogy have been completed and the sequel will be released in the UK by my publishers next year. The sequel takes the reader onto the bloody frontier of the Palmer River goldfields in the years 1874 with the characters established in the first novel. It also takes the reader with the Native Mounted Police and their war against the fierce Kalkadoon warriors of central Queensland. My third book, Flight of the Eagle concludes the trilogy in the years 1884 - 86 and follows the conclusion of the curse to its end. The novel is set against the campaign in the Sudan with the British army and a return to Ireland by one of the characters who the reader has met as a baby in the first book. And for the information for the reviewer from Cardiff... the fate of the evil Captain Mort is not nice. Thank you for your kind words for a first time author. I hope to be in the UK next year on tour. Peter Watt

4.0 out of 5 stars An awesome Ozzie book, gripping and highly desciptive, 27 Sep 2000
By A Customer
A new author, here to challenge Wilbur Smith for writing historical fiction that is hard hitting and gripping. I too could not put this book down. The book is written from a many peopled perspective, and Watt draws on the readers imagination. The desciption of the nineteenth century outback and of the Aborigine's "dreaming" state were both wonderful, and I cannot wait to hungrily devour the follow up, which has the potential to draw on early twentieth century South America as well as Australia for a colourful background. Many strong characters are already established, either to love as in the case of the Duffy's or to hate - the evil Captain Mort. More soon I hope!

4.0 out of 5 stars couldn't put it down, 31 Aug 2000

I read this book in a day. If you've studied any Australian History then I reccommend this book, but read it anyway. Although it did get a bit off the track towards the end, but I thoughly enjoyed it and can't wait for his next book.
