Firstly, be aware that there are two versions of this album that I am aware of. This is the short 36-minute EP version. I now possess the extended version which has 17 tracks on it. Be that as it may, I first encountered the album in the shorter EP form and fell in love with it. I had never heard Arena before and came across the album via a 'happy accident'.

The Cry is, in effect, a compilation and extension of tracks found on previous Arena albums. The group have explored a thread of interwoven ideas not previously developed on these other CDs. The music is, for the most part, instrumental, and not as rock orientated as much of their material. It tends to be more orchestral and lyrical in tone. It's a great listen on a good hi-fi system - the production is top-notch.

The final, tenth, track on this CD version (Healer) is punchier than the others and an ideal segue into the second set of 7 tracks to be found on the alternative version which comprise a showcase of other Arena material. These 7 tracks are more representative of Arena's prog rock style.

I thoroughly recommend this CD as an addition to your collection if you enjoy prog influenced by Marillion, Pendragon and similar. Healer is the only track that comes near the driving rock sound; the rest is far more laid back.

On the strength of this purchase I am now building up my collection of Arena CDs. But I am a fan of Clive Nolan's work so maybe I'm biased!

Fans of Arena -- especially its most recent work, "Contagion" -- might not recognize the musical style of this EP, which is compiled from selections from its first two albums. The first nine selections draw on a theme from "The Cry" series of pieces on those albums. The final selection, "The Healer," is a departure in style and more reflective of Arena's harder-edged sound.
Acoustic guitar and moody keyboard sounds dominate the EP and the music often has a cinmatic feel to it. Some of this stuff could pass for Enya, which might not appeal to all prog fans. "Crying for Help" features a nice electric guitar solo at the song's climax, but the overall mood is quiet, introspective and a bit sad.
