Southern Arcana, Book 1

Jackson Holt makes a decent living as a private investigator in New Orleans, home of one of the largest underground supernatural populations in the United States. He and his partners have never met a case they couldn't crack...until a local bar owner asks him to do a little digging on her newest hire.

New Orleans is the fourth destination in as many months for Mackenzie Brooks, a woman on the run from a deranged stalker. After all, any man who shows up on her doorstep claiming to be her destined lover has more than a few screws loose. But crazy doesn't explain why he always finds her no matter how far she runs.

When her well-meaning boss puts a PI on her case, Mackenzie comes face to face with the incredible truth: magic is real, and whatever spell has kept her hidden and separate from the paranormal world is rapidly deteriorating.

With time running out, she has no choice but to trust Jackson as he struggles to uncover the truth of her past--and her destiny.

Warning: This book contains devious schemes, epic battles, forbidden love between a shapeshifter and a spellcaster, nosy secondary characters, furniture-endangering sex and a woman fighting to choose her own destiny.

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, original 27 Feb 2014
By Galros
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I will never understand why the majority of paranormal stuff has werewolves being the most abundant shapeshilfters - but since they don't feature highly in this story, I'll forgive the author for that quibble.

I really enjoyed this story, very pleasant way of spending a few hours. The sex scenes didn't do much for me and to be honest, it felt like they were put in there just to fulfil a formula or something, but the rest of the book was good. Writing was engaging, the characters had a believable mix of good and bad. I think the end came a bit too quickly and easily - there wasn't enough struggle to the climax for my liking, but then I'm bloodthirsty like that!

I'll be getting the next one in the series come payday :)

4.0 out of 5 stars Southern Arcana book 1 10 Dec 2010
By Sarah (Feeling Fictional) TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback
Mackenzie is running scared, trying to escape from a crazy stalker who seems to be able to find her no matter where she goes. Running out of options she finds herself a job in a bar to try and build up her dwindling savings and although she finds herself wishing she could stay in New Orleans she knows she must be ready to leave at a moments notice. Her new boss Nicole is worried about her, she knows Kenzie is hiding something and fears for her safety so she asks her friend and PI Jackson to investigate. Jackson finds out more than he bargained for and Kenzie soon discovers a whole supernatural society that she had no idea existed.

Crux is a book I purchased ages ago and I have no idea why it has taken me so long to get around to reading it - I wish I'd started it sooner but the good news is that book 2 (Crossroads) is already available and I only have to wait until January to get my hands on book 3 (Deadlock). I won't be leaving it too long before I read both of those because I thoroughly enjoyed Crux.

Mackenzie is a great heroine, although she is scared of her stalker and then shocked when she discovers this whole supernatural world she doesn't whine and complain the whole time. She isn't a wimpy character and she is prepared to help herself rather than just sit back and wait to be rescued. Having said that I also liked the fact that she is willing to accept advice from those who know more about the situation she finds herself in than she does. Although she is wary of Jackson and Nicole at first she feels instinctively that she can trust them and is grateful for the help and support they offer her.

3.0 out of 5 stars Agadoo, doo, don't!!!! 18 Aug 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Felt duty-bound to go through the motions of reading this, hoping to find another gem in an Amazon freebie!! Unfortunately this was not to be. Didn't empathise with any of characters. Wasn't intrigued by the plot. In fact, I was quite relieved to reach the end! Didn't hate it though, just didn't love it!!
What more can I say about this book except that I've read it? Will I be reading any more by this author? Not unless it's another free one and I'm bored!

3.0 out of 5 stars Shame about the ending 16 Aug 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I really liked the main characters in this book and the romance elements were great. I was a little bit disappointed in the plot development though, the main story seems to take a back seat to the romance in the second half of the book and that just wasn't the case in the first half. However, the book is the first in a series so I am hopeful that things will develop further in the sequel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Completely Hooked! 31 Aug 2012
By emv71
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is the first book I read by Moira Rogers and now I'm completely hooked! If you're a fan of Heather Killough-Walden (another author I can't get enough of) then you'll love these books. I'm anxiously awaiting the delivery of my pre-order of Impulse (Book 5 in the Southern Arcana series, of which Crux is Book 1) on 4 September. Cannot recommend this author highly enough!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Edge of your seat kind of story 4 April 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
This series will be on the top of my favourite list. It is full of twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat and keep turning the page to see what happens next, it has just the right mix of magic, wolves, shifters and of course sizzling hot romance

3.0 out of 5 stars The Shifter within her... 20 Aug 2012
By Cheryl M-M TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Crux has quite a few similarities with the R.Vincent Stray series. Young shapeshifter, who doesn't know anything about her kind, being fought over for breeding purposes. The end scene culminates in a ranch like magic fight finale. Not sure who read which book first, as they seem to have been published almost at the same time.
However this book lacks some of the finesse of other books in the genre. Rogers has created a nice setting and many multifaceted characters. I would even go as far as to say, perhaps too many. There are too many scenes which set up possible 'couples' for future books and storylines, to the point of repetitiveness.
The scenes need more depth, as the reader seems to be thrust from one scenario to another without much time to settle. Saying that, I liked the rapport between Jackson and Mackenzie in their scenes, which seems to imply that Rogers knows how to get there, but this book just isn't quite at the best destination yet.
