Be careful what you wish for...

Ophelia’s had a wicked crush on Martin since they were kids, but she was always just his geeky little friend. Then, on the first day of her junior year, he’s suddenly and wildly attracted to her. She can’t imagine what’s changed, but shocking her small school’s social order fills her with vindication for insults suffered.

Ophelia meets Adrian right after and true love extinguishes the wicked crush. In secret, he gives her courage against a specter threat.

Tristan is pale and hungry, and draws Martin’s immediate ire. He knows things about Ophelia which she assumes are delusions brought on by an aggravated illness like her own, diabetes. When battle breaks out between his ancient race and new blood, even the courage of her secret love might be crushed.

2.0 out of 5 stars Was okay! 29 Nov 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
After getting the Ophelia Dawson Chronicles for review I decided to start with the novella because it's a prequel to Sugar Rush the first book in the series. Now personally, I'd rather read the prequel before the actual book. I like to know the back story before and not the other way around but I can't help think maybe I made the wrong choice with this.

Although I thought this novella was okay, I have to admit I didn't really enjoy it and considering that it's only 50 pages I wouldn't have expected that. I felt that the story started off quite confusing and I couldn't really understand what the fuss over Martin was and while I was trying to get a feel for the characters I couldn't really connect with any of them. Not only that but I also felt the story jumped around a bit and it left me with quite a few questions but I have to admit, I'm not really all that interested in finding out the answers.

What I did like what the ideas that the author had with the Owl and of course I really like Tristan and Adrian. However they didn't really out weigh the way I felt about the rest of the novella. I don't necessary think the author did a bad job, I actually know a few people who enjoyed this series but maybe it was my fault for reading the prequel before the actual book. Maybe that's why I couldn't connect with it but I'll be honest when I say I'm not sure if this series is for me. Maybe I'll give Sugar Rush a go in the near future.....but we'll see.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ophelia Dawson Chronicles book 1 1 Nov 2011

Crushed Sugar is a short novella and a prequel to the first book in the Ophelia Dawson Chronicles series by Kimber An. It works well as an introduction to the characters and has made me curious about the next story (a full length novel called Sugar Rush). We meet Ophelia and her twin sister Bianca, considering they are identical twins they are about as different as you can get. Ophelia is a bit of a loner, she is also geek who is often called on by her crush Martin to fix his gadgets. She doesn't seem to be in the best of health, at this point all we know is that she suffers with diabetes and has potential problems with her kidneys. Bianca on the other hand loves the latest fashions and spending time gossiping with her friends. Although they are very different they obviously have a close relationship and I'm looking forward to seeing more of that as the series continues.

I didn't really understand why Ophelia has such a crush on Martin, I didn't find out enough about him to see the attraction. All we really know is that he is one of the popular kids, he has a reputation for sleeping around and is known as a heart breaker. He has never shown any interest in Ophelia (apart from when he has a problem with his computer) so she is shocked when he seems to set his sights on her. I'm more interested in the two new boys at school Adrian and Tristan, they both seem like they're keeping secrets and I want to know what they are. I'm suspicious that Martin is hiding something too.

The series was described to me as paranormal romance but you don't really get that from this first installment, I'm guessing the romance will kick in during the second book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Wish 3.5 stars was possible 28 Mar 2011

This was somewhere between "OK" and "I like it!" It is a prequel to a book that I REALLY liked, though, so it gets some extra points there as it gives me a bit of back story on the characters in Sugar Rush (The Ophelia Dawson Chronicles).

The thing is... I don't really feel that the back story was NECESSARY for me to like the already likable characters. Nor was it really needed for me to understand their motivations. Plus, it leaves a bunch of questions unanswered, like "WHAT IS UP WITH THE BIRDS? WHO ARE THEY?" I know, the author isn't obligated to wrap up EVERYTHING in a story, but in this prequel, I don't feel like anything was wrapped up at all. The writing was solid as usual, but I feel like I just watched the author open a bunch of doors to tempting places and then leave before inviting me to walk through any of them.

This is, for this medium, acceptable, because this book is marketed as a PREQUEL, but... Well... I'll admit it... I'm a brat about cliff hanger endings and unresolved questions. (And this is the latter, rather than the former, unless you consider unease about Ophelia and Martin to be a cliff hangerworth offense.) Good thing I read the main novel first. I highly recommend buying this WITH Sugar Rush (The Ophelia Dawson Chronicles), and reading the two stories back to back to avoid any potential tantrums. ;-) As a pair, these books are more than worth it, but if you're only going to buy one of the two, PLEASE go get Sugar Rush right away!

Crushed Sugar is a wonderful read. Keeps you entertained and on the edge of your seat waiting to see what happens next. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys the supernatural and romance. I can't wait for the next one in the series. As I'm sure it will be just as gripping.
5.0 out of 5 stars Really Interesting Start to the Series 5 July 2012

Ophelia and her twin sister, Bianca, live in Togo, Alaska, a little town that has suffered from the loss of tourism. All Ophelia wants is to graduate high school and to get out of town. But it would be nice if her crush Martin Brynner would look at her like she was his girlfriend instead of friend that is a girl that can fix all of his broken gadgets.

She is starting her junior year when a couple strange things happen. Martin has turned eighteen and seems to be in love with Ophelia even though he has a track record of one-night stands and being the head cheerleader's boyfriend. There are also two new boys at school, Adrian and Tristan. Both seem to be odd but Ophelia wants to help everyone.

Then Ophelia starts falling for Adrian. Now things are getting complicated. How can she desire Adrian so strongly and why does Martin keep saying she smells sweet? And how does pale and cold Tristan fit into the picture.

This is a novella based on the Ophelia Dawson series. All I can say is it is a great introduction and I can't wait to read the next book, Sugar Rush. I loved Ophelia and left for her. I also am very curious about the what's of Martin, Adrian, and Tristan.

I received this novella for free from the author in exchange for an honest review.
