Amazon.co.uk Review
If you can get over its slightly far-fetched storyline, there's a lot of heart in Crush. Three longstanding friends--Kate, the American headmistress (Andie MacDowell), Janine the police inspector (Imelda Staunton) and Molly, an acerbic, thrice-divorced GP (Anna Chancellor)--meet up each week to drown their sorrows with gin and cigarettes, with a prize box of caramels for the one who can report the most disastrous love life. It's this failure with men that has cemented their friendship, for in all other respects they're very different personalities. The cracks begin to show when Kate has a fling, developing into a love affair, with an ex-student 15 years her junior. When she announces that she's going to marry the sensitive and sexy Jed (fresh-faced Kenny Doughty, of whom we'll undoubtedly be seeing more), Molly and Janine are determined to put a stop to such foolishness.

We soon discover that, for all their raunchy talk, they're hidebound by convention, shocked by the difference in age and status and fuelled by jealousy. Their actions spark off a disastrous chain of events that give a vital grittiness to the film. Visually, it's a bit like stepping into a Trollope novel (Joanna, not Anthony), all Cotswold stone, clergy and quaint streets. But the strong dialogue and the conviction of performances from the three main characters (cast to excellent effect) make Crush a deeply absorbing, bittersweet film.

On the DVD: Crush is a good DVD package: not only do we have sharp sound and well-defined colour that brings out the best of the picturesque setting, but the extras are well put together. As well as theatrical trailer and scene selections, there's 25 minutes' worth of interviews with cast and director, a behind-the-scenes feature, a brief but riveting deleted scene, a featurette on the storyline, and the option to watch the film with or without the director's commentary, which is very enlightening. There are also details of other Film Four releases. --Harriet Smith

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic film, 21 April 2003
By A Customer
'CRUSH' is possibly one of the best romantic comedies I have seen since 'Four Weddings and a Funeral'.

The story revolves around a headmistress, Kate, played charmingly by Andie MacDowell, who falls for a 25 year old boy whom she used to teach, Bobby Crush, played by the charismatic Kenny Doughty. When her friends find out about this, they heavily disapprove and do all they can to make her change her mind. The film differs from most rom coms in that though there are plenty of sharp one liners and the odd slapstick scene, there is a depth and tenderness beneath the script reflected in both Andie MacDowell's relationship with her friends and her blossoming romance with Kenny Doughty. There are also darker moments towards the end and a bittersweet ending that gives this film a lot more edge than the usual Hollywood boy-meets-girl offerings. This also means that despite a strong female cast, the film can be equally enjoyed by men as well as women - I certainly wouldn't label this as a just a 'girly' film.

All of the characters are sympathetic, even Anna Chancellor when she is at her most vicious. Andie MacDowell, if a little stiff at times, is extremely endearing and though this is the first film I've seen Kenny Doughty in, he shines with superstar charisma. I've no doubts that in the future he will become the UK's answer to Leonardo DiCaprio.

My only (tiny) criticisms of this film is that in places it is a little derivative and there is occasionally one too many an echo of other films (particularly 'Four Weddings'). But overall I adored 'Crush' and I was surprised last year when it didn't make big bucks at the box-office. So I've recently bought the video and I've been showing it to all my friends who missed out on seeing it at the cinema - and everyone I show it loves it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Loved it, 29 Mar 2003
By A Customer
It may not be everyones cup of tea, and yes it's a bit of a chick flick, but I loved this. One of those romantic, dreamy comedy/dramas that is so easy to watch, although at the end there is an unexpected twist. It's escapism, set in a perfect Cotswold village with immaculatly dressed, attractive characters. The storyline may be a bit far fetched, with the gorgeous Andi McDowell struggling to find love but if you just want to sit back with a glass of wine and have a relaxing evening it's near perfect.
