Synopsis

In this work, Robert Payne brings life to the Crusades that founded vast kingdoms in Palestine nearly 1000 years ago. It is a story of battles and valour, greed and piety, folly and baseness that mark the first major clash of Christianity and Islam.

4.0 out of 5 stars Throughly enjoyable, 22 July 2003

Thoroughly enjoyable and very interesting.

The book paints a portrait of 200 years of powerful rulers, armies great and small and the intrigues of nations. Each chapter is presented as a mini-essay on the topic of the Crusades. The many personalities within are portrayed well although occasionally people seem a little caricatured.

This book held my interest throughout.

5.0 out of 5 stars An incredible history of the crusades., 21 Nov 2002
This review is from: The Crusades (Wordsworth Military Library) (Paperback)
Robert Payne has produced a masterpiece here. His narrative is rich, smooth, colourful and yet explains events in a clear and unbiased style. I love the excerpts from letters written by, among others, Richard Coeur de Lion, the Old Man of the Mountain, Emperor Frederick II, and various Templar Grand Masters. They add an extra dimension to the history providing modern readers with a chance to feel the triumph and tragedy as never before. I have read many books on the Crusades and on the Military Orders but none come close to matching this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars A rare balanced account!, 21 April 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: The Crusades (Wordsworth Military Library) (Paperback)
An extremely fluid account of all the European crusades. The pace of the book is great as it ventures through the various consective crusades, retaing its structure and balance at all times. It is a great overview of the era told in an enchanting way that captures all of the magnitude and implications of the crusades. So many modern books covering the crusades give a horribly distorted account of the period, demonising the crusaders at every possible turn. This book takes a much fairer, balanced account, reminding the reader that it was not only the crusaders who conducted massacares at various times during this period. It also covers Saladins ultimate desire of furthering his conquests to Europe. All in all, this is a great read that captures the atmosphere of the time, and is fair to all parties involved. It tells the facts as they are and dosent attempt to make any sweeping statements, based on paper thin evidence, that is so apparent in other modern history books these days.
