Format: Hardcover
2nd edition, 1965. 250 b&w photographs by the author; colour frontispiece photo; 80 line diagrams including Fig.80 'Standing and running rigs of a yawl' spread across rear paste-down.

THIS COMPREHENSIVE BOOK covers every practical aspect of cruising under sail and ever since its first publication in 1950 it has held its position as one of the leading books, if not the outstanding one, on the subject, for beginner and expert alike. Since then, Eric Hiscock has demonstrated the excellence of his knowledge and judgement by twice sailing round the world in his 30-foot sloop Wanderer III, as told in his voyage books Around the World in Wanderer III and Beyond the West Horizon, and has written Voyaging Under Sail to supplement Cruising with special reference to ocean passages and far-off seas. He has also thoroughly revised Cruising Under Sail. Much of the text and a good number of illustrations were of permanent value, but wherever improvements could be made the text has been rewritten and new illustrations provided, both photographs and diagrams. Developments from 1950 to 1965 are covered, with the benefit of the author's additional experience: there is increased attention to auxiliary engines, and to man-made fibres for sails and rigging, new treatment of radio direction finders and echo-sounders, a section on the regulations for the rule of the road at sea (revised 1965), and examples drawn from more modern types of cruising yacht, as well as old and proven designs. For all ordinary cruising in home waters, as distinct from ocean voyaging, this book has a new usefulness added to its previous high reputation.

Some reviews of Cruising Under Sail
'...the charm of the author shows through even his competent and well-ordered, on technical matters.

The book itself is a sailing classic by Eric Hiscock , dated -1950s world -but still valuable to any would be long distance cruising sailor. What I did not like is the earlier editions have clear diagrams one can see , this edition is an electronically edited(?) edition and in the due process ALL drawings , diagrams / pictures are poorly reproduced to a level I can not see at all ; very faint. I have returned it and got full refund. Thank you amazon .

The sailor's companion. 1 Mar. 2004
By The Old Philosopher - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
Hiscock's classic text on long distance cruising has been the bible of long distance sailors for two or three generations now. What it lacks in the latest gadgets it makes up for with decades of experience and knowledge of the subject. The safety at sea section alone is worth the price. Chapters include ropes and rope work, masts and sails (cruising sails, not racing sails), accommodations and living on board, passages and navigation. Unless you already have a decade of long distance sailing behind you this is a valuable book.
Classic 13 May 2014

Nice reading. Info is from mid 19th century, this was a classic read, I enjoyed the contrast of reading about sailing in times before I was born!
An interesting read 8 May 2013

I bought this book because it was referred to by one of my other sailing books. It was written by Hiscock and his wife based on actual cruising experiences which makes it interesting. It is a good addition to my book shelf.
Small lettering Issue 28 Sept. 2014
By Eric - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Very detailed book. I do however feel the lettering is very small. I find it smaller than your average book. Something should be mentioned to potential buyers just in case their eyesight is limited.
