Review

The Cruiser's Handbook of Fishing. Its 418 pages are packed with information on all aspects of fishing and is well worth the read for anyone interested in fishing.

Product Description

There's the thrill of wrestling a fifty-pound yellowfin or hefty wahoo up from the depths and onto the deck of your boat. Then comes the mouthwatering aroma of your fish, slow-cooking on an open grill, followed by the indescribable pleasure of eating it. And of course, there's the sense of pride and fellowship you feel when you share your abundant catch -- and your fish stories -- with other seafarers and friends. Experiences such as these are the stuff of many a cruiser's dreams -- dreams that far too often go unfulfilled. That's because fishing from a cruising boat is unlike any other type of fishing. It requires special preparation and a unique set of skills, at best acquired piecemeal, by word of mouth, or through frustrating trial and error. Until now.

The Cruiser's Handbook of Fishing is the first-ever complete guide to finding, catching, processing, and cooking fish from the decks of a cruising boat. Its authors, Scott and Wendy Bannerot, have successfully cruise-fished tropical and temperate seas for more than two decades. Now, for the first time, they share the fruits of their experiences, along with what they've gleaned from their exhaustive research of the professional and scientific literature on the subject. With the help of dozens of detailed line illustrations, photographs, and fascinating and instructive real-life vignettes, they impart everything they know about catching fish at various latitudes from a cruising boat underway or at anchor, from a dinghy, in the surf, and while diving reefs.

I bought this book expecting the usual light regurgitation of common knowledge and what I got was an utterly comprehensive guide to collecting and processing food (and fun) at sea.
I am very impressed!
The only gap in the whole book is it's lack of Med coverage - however most of the common pelagic species found in the Med are found in areas covered by the book, and the fishing techniques are so complete that if you are near the water anywhere in the world this book has something to offer.

Should be renamed 'The Cruisers Bible of Fishing', and I hope to see future issues from the Authors, and if they need any crew...

Brilliant. As a sailor and ex-commercial fisherman I cannot recommend this enough. From rock-pooling with a sharp stick to deep-ocean trolling using kites this book covers everything in fine detail. The exhaustive text is interspersed with gripping and educational anecdotes describing the authors experiences around the world.

I am going to embark on a cruise in the upcoming year and this book pretty much covers any question I could possibly have conceived to ask about fishing whilst afloat.

I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone cruising, but be warned, you will want to spend about £1500 on fishing kit once you've read it.

Enjoy.
