Product Description

Description

Steve Knightley is rightly regarded as one of the foremost songwriters on the current English acoustic-roots scene. In partnership with Phil Beer, he has transformed the concept of the 'pub folk singer' to a phemoenon that saw almost 5,000 people join Show Of Hands for a magical evening of music at a sold-out Royal Albert Hall. Slipping the SOH yoke here, Steve presents 11 tracks that prick the collective concience with typical insight.

Whether persuing the political or examining the emotional, Knightly has a way of making it personal and thereby maximising the emotional impact. The ease of his lived-in vocal-style and the precision of his guitar playing are offset by some deceptively simple arrangements that make the most of these songs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cruel River by Steve Knightley - Buy it..., 29 May 2007
By Ade "Ade" (Totnes, Devon) - See all my reviews
Well what can I say? I suppose I'm biased, having seen Steve playing live regularly from the mid seventies onwards, then followed Show of Hands ever since they started. Steve is a very clever songwriter and musician with a truly unique voice. All three talents come together in this selection of songs that cover a range of topics. As a westcountry resident I particularly love the way Steve writes on local and folky themes as in Transported, Tall Ship Story and Caragana Wind. His fondness of topical issues for songs is there too with Raining Again, Poppy Day and All Quiet on the Western Front. And you can't get more topical than Crooked Man 07 as we look forward to the departure from Number Ten of the song's inspiration.

Tastefully arranged and recorded - in the westcountry of course - this collection is a must for Steve/Show of Hands fans. There's even some Dire Straits as a bonus track.

You never know, Crooked Man 07 may even end up as a theme for Tony's "legacy" album collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rhythm of life, 13 Jun 2007
By CRB "CRB" (Brighton, UK) - See all my reviews
Steve Knightley stripped bare. One of the best songwriters of his generation with minimal backing, just the driving rhythm of strummed cuatro or tenor guitar. Listen to Its Raining Again, Poppy Day or any of the other songs on this album and you wonder why Seth Lakeman (who is good, but not this good) gets all the media attention.

5.0 out of 5 stars A superb and thought provoking CD for 2007, 23 Jun 2007
By Kentish Man (East Midlands, UK) - See all my reviews
Steve Knightley has 'served' his apprenticeship in the music business, and now is gaining status and some fame as the song writing half of Acoustic duo 'Show of Hands' with multi-instrumentalist Phil Beer. This solo album shows that his songs are just as powerful and musically interesting with few or no backing musicians. Above all it is his pointed and haunting lyrics that remain in the head long after the album has finished - Poppy Day & Crooked Man '07 in particular are modern classics.

A great album - my favourite of 2007!
