4.0 out of 5 stars Cruel Justice 5 Oct 2011

The first book in the DI Lorne Simpkins set of books. It was a page turner, I read it in two nights as I just wanted to keep going. Even though the murders were gruesome, Mel doesn't go into gory detail like some authors do which, in my opinion, made for better reading.
I look forward to reading more of Lorne's cases, but I hope she gets a few days off as even I was getting tired by her hard work and long hours.

Cant wait to start the others in the series and i wont be waiting 2 weeks I can assure you! Well done to the author for creating such believable characters and getting the balance right between the partners! WONDERFUL ! Hope she is typing as i write this ... i need more !

4.0 out of 5 stars Good plot. 3 April 2013

I'm not going to write a long review, but mainly answer some of the comments given as two or one stars.

I personally found this a very interesting look at why people suddenly turn into murderers. Why life changing events can have such long term and devastating effects and turn people into raging killers.

DI Lorne Simpkins, her husband Tom and their problems were written as people truly going through a crisis because of their change of roles.

This was a good detective story and I'm looking forward to meeting Lorne Simpkins in the next two books in the series.

3.0 out of 5 stars Should be an interesting series 6 Oct 2014

I was looking forward to reading the first in the Justice Series by Mel Comley as I keep seeing such great things about it. I am however very behind considering I think she has now released book 10 in the series’ most recently. Detective Lorne Simpkins is the main lead of this series and it seems from the very beginning that all is not well in her marriage. Along with her partner DS Pete Childs they seem to work long and laborious hours. When a headless body is found, it seems their next long and arduous case has been found.

I certainly liked Lorne however although she was a good character and the writing was pretty good, there were parts of the story that felt a bit too stilted and maybe not as realistic as they could have. We meet additional characters but none that leave you wanting to know too much more. The story was interesting and certainly kept me reading, but there were parts that just weren’t authentic enough for me.

Having said all of that, the writing was great and flowed well and although Lorne may not be a favourite character she held my interest. I think that this is a great start to a series, and am pretty sure that Mel Comley, like other authors has just improved with each book she writes. I am actually looking forward to how this series progresses and have already ordered book 2. Certainly a series that has a lot of potential and is great for people looking for new authors.

4.0 out of 5 stars it was a reasonable holiday read 16 Aug 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
It ok, I have read a lot of Tess Gerritsen books and was hoping this would be in the same line. It was quite good in places, but lacked any real depth to the plot, which could have been worked out after the first chapter. I was quite gripping on some places but i don't think I would worry about reading more from this author ... sorry.

5.0 out of 5 stars First in the series 1 Nov 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Mel Comley. First in the series
Cruel Justice
This is the first book in a series that features Lorne Simpkins as a detective inspector, and from the very first chapter this book will grip you. Lorne is married to Tom and they have a twelve year old daughter called Charlie, all is not well in this marriage though. Follow this story and find out how her marriage works out, as well as trying to find the psychotic murderer who is causing havoc,
This is the first book I have read by Mel Comley and I can honestly say it won't be the last, I highly recommend that you read this book and like me you will download the next in this fantastic series.
5 stars. 01 November 2013.
