I bought this a couple of years ago, listened to it once or twice and left it alone. Their previous album 'Sleeps like a Curse' grabbed me instantly. But then I put it in the cd player a couple of weeks ago and am hooked. The songwriting, arrangements, playing and production are all astonishing. I can't think of any one they sound like. The arrangements and layers of each song are just perfect. , The singer's rather limited range, and his soft semi-spoken delivery would rule him out of fronting all manner of bands. But here it just fits snugly and is just right. The extra cd which consists of a handful of covers -s one Dylan and Cohen and one or two others just doesn't work at all because the arrangements are more traditional and what sets the Panics apart is the way in which the parts are so neatly playing off each other. Forget the one and three stars reviews - by people who haven't heard the album! The music gets under your skin.
