5.0 out of 5 stars A most fascinating read, 27 Aug 2005

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Cruel April: Fall of Saigon (Hardcover)
This is definitely one of the most interesting books about Vietnam. Olivier Todd, a left-wing journalist who confesses to being 'led up the garden path' after he discovered the real nature of the Vietcong in Hanoi, Saigon and the jungle. This is a very detailed look at the final four months of the Vietnam War right up to the fall of Saigon on 30 April 1975. Being an ex-left wing journalist, Todd also covers the 'Day after'. The Vietcong indeed knew how to wage war. But waging peace remained an elusive goal. Moreover, the victor in the following years also follows this up with the usual show trials, which appear to have become the hallmark of communist regimes.

I suspect that a lot of the information in this book has not been put in writing before. The real story about Vietnam has been 'revealed' in lots of books. But none of these revelations are complete. If you are interested in the Vietnamese War then this is a must-read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cruel April: Fall of Saigon, 24 May 2005
This review is from: Cruel April: Fall of Saigon (Hardcover)
this is by far the most compelling book on vietnam - ever !
i am reading the original but updated (feb '05) french version "ce jour là 30 avril 1975 ; la chute de saigon".
todd's style is spellbinding as he transports you into the midst of the fast-crumbling months of '75.
go for it !

5.0 out of 5 stars Memories and Questions, 2 Feb 2001
By Bradley J Richards - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Cruel April: Fall of Saigon (Hardcover)
Our nation breathed a collective sigh of relief when The Paris Peace Accord was signed in 1973. It was supposed to be the end of the Vietnam War. As we would learn 2 years later, it was not. Olivier Todd originally covered the war from 1965-1973. After the Fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975, he decided it was time to summarize the final days of the conflict. His book covers the infamous 4-month period from January to April in 1975 and the total collapse of South Vietnam. In reading this book, it is quite obvious he invested a great deal of time into interviews and research. The book not only reviews the final days but also raises many questions about the events surrounding them. The reader will find himself mixing memories with those questions in every chapter.

4.0 out of 5 stars Primarily Political..., 23 Mar 2010
By F. Knocker - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Cruel April: Fall of Saigon (Hardcover)
The book is mostly about the political circumstances surrounding the fall of Saigon (and political events well before April 1975). If you're interested in the military and social aspect of the defeat (as I was), this probably won't be for you. Very dry reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cruel April, 6 Feb 2012
By R. STANLEY MILLER - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Cruel April: Fall of Saigon (Hardcover)
Greetings,

This book, by Oliver Todd is a classic right up there with or near equal to Stanley Karnow's Vietnam: A History. Spending nearly ten years in the wartorn country I can appreciate the research and effort Todd when through, not to mention the personal experience of actually being there in compiling the work. The tome is the most accurate, and truthful depiction of events during the period I have ever read, and I have read quiet a few.
