"Disgustingly clever, revoltingly entertaining: top-drawer" Booklist on Ghoul "Slade blends a classic murder mystery game with occult arcana to such an intricate degree" Publishers Weekly on Ripper "Slade has a reputation for conducting extensive research before beginning to write his novels, and there is much evidence of this in Swastika." Quill & Quire on Swastika"

Product Description

Meet Wyatt Rook: lawyer, historian, detective.

A World War II bomber has been unearthed half a century after vanishing on a secret mission over Nazi Germany. Liz Hannah, the pilot's granddaughter, hires Rook to investigate.

Rook's inquiries lead him into a shadowy world of religious secrecy that involves the crucifixion at Golgotha, the Crusades, the Inquisition, and Satanism.

With a painting and a map as clues, Rook (and the reader) must solve a series of biblical mysteries and impossible crimes to unravel the greatest locked room puzzle of all: how did Jesus escape from his tomb?

Blocking the lawyer at every turn is the Legionary of Christ, a modern Crusader backed by the morphed Inquisition, which will stop at nothing to keep the Judas puzzle - the Achilles heel of the Christian Bible - from being solved.

"A smoking hot read! Prepare to be entertained. Slade conjures up a Christian's worst nightmare. This slick whodunit is full of twists and turns." - The CTV Network

"If you want a series of mysteries better than the puzzles in THE DA VINCI CODE, CRUCIFIED is your book. Slade has all the hot buttons punched. There is gore to the armpits, some fine lunatics, a touch of heresy, and a fiendish religious cabal that will stop at nothing to keep the world from discovering that the New Testament may just be hogwash." - The Globe and Mail

"Unfolds with effortless readability, despite the fact it ranges over two millennia. There are twists aplenty, scenes of gruesome torture and murder (with Inquisition tools, of course), and a series of small mysteries leading up to the larger mystery at the center of the book. It leaves one wanting more." - Quill & Quire

"Those with an insatiable appetite for conspiracy thrillers will be most rewarded." - Publishers Weekly

"BOOK OF THE MONTH. This Satanic shocker is a walloping murder mystery that cuts throats and shows no quarter. Slade's grip on claustrophobic, clammy suspense is masterful. Ambitiously dark, sophisticated, and complex. Enjoy." - Fangoria

"Creatively combines religious milestones to pose a highly plausible threat to the Christian Church." - The Advocate

"As far as occult thrillers go, this is a fun one. In a time-hopping adventure that's part INDIANA JONES and part DA VINCI CODE, Slade plays various historical events off each other with verve, drawing us into his characters with believable dialogue and lots of bloody action." - Kirkus Reviews

"CRUCIFIED delivers a reliable trio of mystery, sex, and gore. The plot moves at breakneck speed. Enjoy the ride." - Precedent

"An entertaining thriller of biblical proportions. Intent on stopping Wyatt Rook from solving the Judas puzzle, a possessed priest uses medieval torture devices to rack up a gruesome death toll. Tracing it all back to Jerusalem in 33 A.D., Rook solves a conundrum of three locked room puzzles in a suspenseful, globe-trotting pressure cooker of a climax. CRUCIFIED will do more for your brain than a crossword puzzle." - Rue Morgue

4.0 out of 5 stars Not a rehash of the DA VINCI CODE.. 7 Oct 2008
Format:Hardcover
This is Michael Slades 13th book, and a complete departure from the other 12 SPECIALX, novels.

If you like locked room mysteries (3), messages in maps, a who dunnit from 2000 years ago, and a pyscho monk from the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith,( the new name for the Inquisition), trying to stop the secret from becoming common knowledge, and all this in one book, then this is for you.
Yes i can see that you may think this is a rehash or copy from the Da Vinci code. But his is much more than that. This is a story where your brain has to think, and reason. The clues are there.

If you like this book and want to read more, then start with Headhunter, then Ghoul, and work your way up through the series.
Each book is very well researched, and the authors that make up Michael Slade bring together over 30 years of trial court experience dealing with the criminally insane. So they should have a rough idea of what goes through peoples minds when committing the acts described in the books.
Any research used is listed in the back of the books, to allow you to start your own journey into the mists of time.

Enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Flight of faith 16 July 2008
By Bawlmer Guy - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
[Note: This review based on the Canadian trade paperback edition]

For many years after my introduction to Michael Slade during the mid-80s, it was tempting to compare successive Special X novels to Slade's first two, Headhunter and Ghoul. This made for a somewhat unsatisfying progression despite some excellent stories. The antidote was to appreciate the merits of each novel on its own. Eventually it became clear that Slade has little interest in being nailed down to any formula, genre, or subject matter, except perhaps for his love of mystery, history, and inventive mayhem. Even so prepared, I was stunned to learn that Slade has offered in his thirteenth novel a thrilling departure from the Special X series.

Crucified is sweet torture for the reader who seeks an answer to the still-hanging "who lives, who dies" question at the end of Kamikaze, the previous Slade novel. It's also a superb example of Slade's ability to link seemingly disparate elements--to reveal what they are would spoil the fun, but they exceed the jaw-dropping connections (among Chinese pharmaceuticals, General Custer, and the legendary Sasquatch) found in Slade's novel Cutthroat. Yet the connections are quite logical; Slade has simply looked deeply enough into history to find them. On top of it all, Crucified entails some interesting twists on the locked-room puzzle found in some Golden Age mysteries.

Wyatt Rook, an author who specializes in Second World War plots, probes the crash site of a British bomber downed over Germany in 1944. As he tries to learn the fates of missing airmen, Rook runs afoul of murderous conspirators who are determined to acquire religious artifacts on behalf of the Vatican.

Crucified includes some fine, realistic exposition of Royal Air Force bomber crews' daily routines. The passages seem to stem from first-hand interviews. If so, it's commendable that Slade has saluted war heroes from another era before they pass on. Tight, smooth, and engrossing throughout, Crucified is the work of a novelist moving onward and upward. Even far from the familiar ground of Special X, Slade flies high, straight, and true. It's a most welcome adventure.

5.0 out of 5 stars A New Character . . . . 8 Oct 2008
By J. S. - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
As a devotee of all things Slade . . . I was interested in reading this latest offering . . . and I was not disappointed. As usual, my friend Slade brings history into the story line . . . and that prompted me to want to read more on the subjects mentioned. And with the creation of a new character in Wyatt Rook . . . the creative juices will be renewed for future adventures. In my opinion it takes a lot to keep those juices flowing . . . as evidenced by the change over time in the books of Dean Koontz and Steven King and others who have continued to create and develop characters that I truly care about and want to read more about. Those are the kinds of authors I ENJOY . . . and kudos to Slade for continuing the cause!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Quick Read 18 Mar 2009
By Michelle D. Kieffaber - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book isn't what I expected from Michael Slade. I'm used to layers of intrigue centered around the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. This book, although a big departure from his usual style, is a fast read with plenty of action to keep you coming back for more. If you are a fan of The Da Vinci code, you will enjoy the subject matter of this book.
