Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Wizardry 8 is the latest game in a series that has spanned over 20 years and once again sees you battling the forces of evil in this turn based RPG.

Set across a science fiction genre, Wizardry 8 to some will be slightly different from what they have come to expect from the traditional RPG and the introduction of robots, guns and the odd spaceship to this fantasy space romp can seem strange at first.

That said, the gameplay is seated firmly in the realm that true RPG fans know and love. Combat, as before is turn based and choosing your party is still driven by stats; the accompanying 72-page manual is full of stats and tables to work out the superior strength of a Lizard man over a Bishop for example.

As you would imagine, graphics have been considerably updated since the last version of Wizardry, released over 10 years ago, and the game now features a detailed 3D world rather than a simple wire frame one.

With over 300 types of monsters, individual character personalities and the endless ability to structure your party, this game is really only for the hardened RPG fan. Those looking for an easier way into what is a very time consuming genre should perhaps try Dungeon Siege.--Jason Denwood

Hidden gem! 2 July 2002
While not having garnered the attention of such recent high-profile releases as Morrowind or Neverwinter Nights, Wizardry 8 still deserves a place as one of the best RPGs on a PC in recent years. If you can get past the slightly outdated graphics (which are still quite nice at higher resolutions), this game is absorbing and EXTREMELY addictive. Offering a huge variety of classes, races, hundreds of spells, quests, sub-quests, etc, this will eat up your life. I think I spent over 50 hours playing without even bothering to try any of of the "plot" missions. While the story is perhaps a little undeveloped, and may make little sense to those who have not played earlier installments (such as myself), the marriage of medieval fantasy with high-technology works surprisingly well and allows the mix of weapons such as rifles, lasers and robots with elves, dragons and magic.
The interface, while initially complicated, soon becomes second-nature and the turn-based combat is more strategic and tactical than many other 1st person RPGs (such as Morrowind's clumsy real-time combat).
In short, browse the shelves of your local games store for this game. You may not have heard of it, but have a little faith; I'm told it can go a long way.

FANTASTIC!!!! 2 Dec 2003
By A Customer
~I tried this game not expecting to like it. I'm not a fan of turn based games at all. However my views soon changed. Once I realised you can clean up the bulky interface from the screen to neat and sleek it was all good. The graphics are great. You are awed and wowed with different areas and new and fun things to look at everywhere. I would say that neverwinter nights has poorer graphics due to their blandness. The monsters and animation of them is something else. The player characters are voice acted well and personable. My only real qualm is that the beginning of the game and the demo (which shows the beginning) only shows a small fraction of the game and not its best bits which may put people off and perhaps the items you find could have been more interesting though not so boring as some games. The storyline is excellent and it truly does have multiple endings. My husband and i both played it at the same time and all the decisions we made affected how the storyline went. We ended up with different games. Music -first rate. It is obvious a lot of detail and time went into this game and i'm sure if it had been better publicised everyone would get a copy.

A Huge adventure... 20 Mar 2003
Be warned - this is one huge game, and playing it all the way through will take a very long time. Wizardry 8 is very addictive once you've got going. You start off controlling a party of 6 characters which you create yourself, with slots for 2 recruitable NPC's to join you later.
The game's good points can also be it's bad points depending on your point of view... firstly the length of time it takes to complete, if you like value for money then this a great, if you hate games that take months to complete then not so great. Secondly the graphics are sligtly dated and simple, however this also makes it run very quickly and efficiently on older pc's, and the gameplay makes up for it. Controls are simple and it doesn't take long to get into playing the game. Sometimes the character's 'comments' throughout the game can be annoying but you can always turn those off. The third main point is that the puzzles you need to solve can be extremely difficult. Unlike the Baldurs Gate series, where it was always obvious where to go and what to do, Wizardry doesn't give you such clear clues. I'd never have completed it without resorting to looking at some walkthrough's on the web...
Character development is two-fold, your attributes improve as you level up, as is the norm, but also as you play - if your character continually chooses melee combat over ranged, his melee skills will improve during the game automatically. Same deal with spellcasting etc.
So in summary, a huge, difficult game, but addictive, simple to play, and a fairly reasonable storyline to keep you going. If you're not bothered about the non-state of the art graphics then definitely recommended.
