Book Description

Eight kingdoms in danger, an enemy that cannot die...

Count Jeddrin has received a grisly message. His son, Filis, is dead, brutally killed by Alured the Black - the first move in his plan to take the eight kingdoms.

But Filis managed to send his own message, telling of the dark forces that control Alured, warning of something more than human behind the man's eyes...

Meanwhile, Dorrin Verrakai, last of a long line of magelords, must forever leave the home she loves in order to protect powerful magic relics created by her ancestors. For their power is desired both by Alured, and by the dark elves infesting the kingdoms. Searching for answers, her friend and King, Kieri, considers waking the magelords from their ancient slumber...

Ever since I first discovered this series written by Elizabeth Moon she has struck me as an author who goes in the direction she wants with her novels, even if that might not be what satisfies the majority of readers. The Paladin's Legacy series is coming to a close in this fifth book in that portion of the series and readers will not find fairy tale happily ever after endings for all the characters. If you've read all the novels you know the earliest books began with the three novels contained in the volume called The Deed Of Paksenarrion: The Deed of Paksenarrion omnibus (The deed of Paksenarrion Series) and has continued in more recent years with the books in the Paladin's Legacy series, starting with Oath Of Fealty: Paladin's Legacy: Book One. At the beginning of this book there is an Author's Note in which Moon states positively that this last book is not the place for readers new to the series to begin. I certainly could not agree more. Because this is the final book all the characters spread out over the previous novels are gathered here. They have lengthy histories, diverse magical abilities, and different religious beliefs which Moon makes no effort to explain in detail in this novel so it is best to at least go back to Oath of Fealty and read forward from there if you are just beginning. I consider myself a fan of Moon's writing and this fantasy world and yet I had a hard time remembering specific incidents from other books which were now being brought forward and acted on. 2.0 out of 5 stars A disappointing end 7 Jun. 2014
    Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I enjoyed the previous books in the series, but felt totally let down by this one. Frankly there is little drama in it, and much of the suspense that has been building over the previous four books is punctured in a few rushed moments. In particular the character of Alured, built up as the great threat over the horizon, is first fatally compromised and then dispatched in a couple of brief scenes. A number of threads I was expected to see resolved were left hanging, and the treatment of others appeared perfunctory.

I was left with the sense of an author who had tired of the world she had created, and was writing this as a contractual obligation. Anyone who has read the previous four books will obviously want to read this as well, but... you have been warned.

    3.0 out of 5 stars Rushed 23 Jun. 2014
    Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Elizabeth Moon tells us that she applies discipline to her writing, always completing her set word count each day. Based on this book she should take a few breaks.

Much of the book is simply the author trotting out text that is needed to complete the story, with no real flair or style. Plot threads simply fizzle out all over the place as she moves on to wrap up some other topic. And some of those wrap-ups must have been conceived and executed on a pretty bad day. So much so that if you read this book because you want to know how the stories in the earlier books end you'll finish the book frustrated - they just end.

I think I know where Dorrin and Camwyn are headed. Other players are in complete limbo. If thee is to be another book I hope the author recognises we need to be interested in the plot development and pleased or at least surprised by the denouement.

I have read the other books in the series, which were all brillant but this book brought all the story together. Anyone reading the series should also read this one.

Perhaps not moving quite as fast as the earlier books in the series but nevertheless an excellent read. Good job!

This is the finish of this part of the story about the royal regalia and were it was from it was interesting and a good read. would hope that it is not the finish of the whole storyline as I would like to know how Paks gets on and the other paladin's especially the new one

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Series! great final book! 10 Aug. 2014

Fabulous final episode sadly. Really enjoyed the whole series I hope Elizabeth writes some more novels in this world but without the 20 year gap there was between this series and the original Paks series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but not as good as others in the series. 4 Nov. 2014

I am a fan of this series but to be honest this book feels 'rushed' as though everything had to fit in as it is the last in this series!
Still good but not as good as some of the other books.
