Product Description

CD Description

The banjo has been a major player in Steve Martin's act since his earliest days of stand-up. Back in the era of wild 'n' crazy guys and arrows through heads, the comedian's bluegrass breakdowns seemed just another puzzle piece to his absurdist shtick. However, four decades into a career of comedy, movies, novels, and memoirs, Martin proves his banjo love nopassing fancy on his dead-serious 2009 musical debut, THE CROW. It's a somber yet fun affair that ranges from rollicking instrumentals like "Hoedown at Alice's" and "Tin Roof" (onwhich he is joined by fellow comedian-musician Eugene Levy)to the rich country balladry of "Pretty Flowers" (featuringDolly Parton & Vince Gill in gentle duet). The only time Martin regresses to silliness comes on "Late for School", a dizzying, sweet, and downright hilarious narrative of a dash to beat the opening bell told from the frantic schoolboy's perspective.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love Bluegrass Music, Love Steve Martin., 16 Aug 2009
By Katrina-UK (Stockport, Cheshire, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
Wow. In one word. I am absolutely thrilled that Steve Martin has created a Banjo Bluegrass album. I have always loved the sound of Bluegrass Music, and it's great that he is putting the spotlight on this genre of music, and presenting it to the masses. How talented is this man?! A comedian, an actor, an author, and a top class Banjo Player and Singer. This guy should be given some sort of medal !

This album is a fantastic depiction of Banjo Playing and Bluegrass Music at its best - you feel like getting up and dancing!! I especially love the tracks where Steve sings, as we all know he's got a lovely voice (Blue Shadows, On The Trail...! How much do I love the film Three Amigos?! I loved it as a kid, and love it just as much now as an adult - must have watched that film about 1000 times!)

Anyway, getting back to the music. This album not surprisingly has had SIX nominations at the Bluegrass Awards coming up in America. If you love American roots music with a bit of folk you'll love this album.

A Must Buy!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A perfect gateway to Bluegrass music, 11 Nov 2009
By Ian C (Staffordshire) - See all my reviews
A simply delightful album, with good tunes and (as always with Bluegrass) musicianship of the highest quality. A wonderful introduction to this aspect of Bluegrass. Hopefully Steve Martin's name may serve to encourage people to listen and then move on to other parts of this rich, but largely overlooked, genre.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Crow, 7 Sep 2009

I've always liked banjo music, players like Earl Scruggs, Lonnie Donegan who
a long time ago was Chris Barber's banjo player. I like Steve Martin as an
accomplished comedy actor then I read somewhere that he played banjo pretty
well too as he practised while sitting around the set making films. I read
then that he had made this disc of his own songs and that was enough to
interest me. I've played it now a couple of times and I really like it.
