Set outside of Newford in 1967, Annie lives in Tartown with the rest of the poor kids. When a handsome, longhaired hippie shows up outside Ernie's Poolroom, Annie is smitten by his exotic good looks and long black hair. The local boys just want to beat him up, but before they can, the stranger suggests an irresistible contest, which reveals that he may be even more mysterious than he appears.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Gentle and passionate story 21 Jan 2013

I like Charles deLint's writing. He is both airy and plausible in his alternate urban fantasies and a fun read. Crow Roads was a delightful reminder of the quality of his plots and his understanding of grinding poverty.

This is not a fun, laugh out loud book but a short introspective of a person who is convinced to get out and leave her environs before she is destroyed. Who and what she meets on her journey out - was delightful. Creating passion and conviction in the short environs of this small book was no easy feat. But Mr. de Lints deft handling of the plot line made the story both plausible and convincing. If you haven't read de Lint before enjoy this introduction and find a copy of Dreams Underfoot or Tapping the Dream Tree or even Spirits in the Wires. He is a spectacular writer who is consistently in the process of making readers say 'wow' and other writers shaking their heads in awe.

He is that good - and this is a delight for an old fan and a modest taste of an introduction for those new to his work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent! 8 Oct 2012

As usual, Charles de Lint captivates with his interesting narration and the depth of characterization, even in a short such as this. I'm pleased that the story was complete at this length and it left the reader wanting to know more about the main character. The way it's written leaves it open for expansion into a larger story later. Excellent!

I love Charles de Lint stories and this one is no exception, I just wish there was more. This story was far too short!
