Book Description

This Crossword Puzzle Dictionary contains several special categories not usually found in puzzle references, for example, complete Kentucky Derby and Nobel Prize winners. Also noteworthy are lists of rivers and their tributaries, cities on rivers, islands, deities, poetic words, and an expanded section on American authors, plus extensive foreign words. The book is up-to-date, scrupulously alphabetical.

1.0 out of 5 stars don't buy for the kindle 24 Feb. 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
DON'T BUY FOR THE KINDLE !! I am sure this book is very useful as a paperback, but it is next to useless as a reference for the kindle. As there is no search function, at least with other dictionaries if you type in a word it would immediately find that word, but not the kindle version. You had to use the page forward/back button until you came to the word you were looking for [if it was in the dictionary]. Very disappointed and I returned it. At least Amazon worked fine in that respect.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't Buy 17 Aug. 2010

Don't buy this dictionary. In the Kindle format, it's too hard to search for words. You have to start at the home page and select the "search book" option every time you look up a word. Then it returns a bunch on nonsense. I would ask Amazon Kindle for my money back but of course they don't have that kind of customer service so you're screwed if you click the "buy it now" option.

1.0 out of 5 stars Short on words. Hard to use. 19 Nov. 2010

I recommend NOT purchasing this dictionary. I'm a crossword puzzle fan and more times than I can tell you, you can't find the word or term you're looking for. I have the ebook version, so hunting isn't as intuitive as if I had the book right there, but even allowing for that, this dictionary is nearly worthless. You should buy Stanley Newman's Million Word crossword dictionary -- it has lots of modern terms, television/movie references -- it's freaking wonderful. AND it opens up in search mode, which the crossword dictionary I'm reviewing does not.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent dictionary! 9 July 2010

I wrote a review two months ago on this wonderful crossword puzzle dictionary, saying that I loved the contents, but Kindle needed to add a search feature. Kindle has done that in its latest versions, both for Kindles & Kindle-for-PC (which is what I'm using). Another reviewer thought that too many search results came up, but I like that much better than the find feature on my PC, which leads me one at a time through multiple results. With the Kindle search feature, when you see the result you want, you merely click on it to go there. Nothing could be easier.

1.0 out of 5 stars Totally not worth it! 29 Aug. 2010

I already own 3 crossword dictionaries (hard cover). each one of them have their own unique and special usage. 2 of them have excellent refernce sections for kentucky derby, olympic hosts, famous names, country listings etc. the so called special sections in this book and boasted other features are lame. i.e. i needed to know the spanish word for "those". i searched under spanish and 0 results found. i searched for "those" and got only reference to "those in office". not even close. where are the so called extensive lists of foreign words? as far as rivers, islands etc-you have to search very specifically THEN page through several pages to possibly find the right link to get to what you are looking for-you cant search for "river" and look thru an alpha list of countires or anything. as for the "special" sections, i randomly searched for kentucky derby and nobel prize, then had to determine which link would actually take me to the actual list-at least i was smart enough to bookmark some of that immediately for future reference! there is NO table of contents to get you to these reference sections, poetic words, foreign words etc-and we all know how easy it is to type on the kindle itself if you are just trying to do some puzzles in bed (if i wanted to use my pc it would be easier to just search google). i bought this by accident by hitting a wrong button while trying to do a search in the sample and figured, oh well, for $7 it should be worth it. but NO! one of my hard cover crossword dictionaries is entirely and strictly alphabetical and still more info and easier to use. the search links in this book are difficult to read and figure out as it only has snipits i.e. when searching for "river" - 72 pages of search results show up and it is not always easy to determine which country or city the links are referring to with the "snip-its" provided. you may only know the link is referring to canada, for example, because of the other words in the link such as "toronto" or "ALTA" (answer for province abbr). the only thing this MAY be good for is looking up single words i.e. "umbrage" (which of course only came up as an answer word-not actually listed on its own) . i had a clue that asked "feudal holding"-couldnt get anything! sorry this review is so long but if you are like me in what you are looking for-you will have better luck searching in the Bermuda Triangle!! SO DISAPPOINTED!!
