`Much more than a morality tale about the danger of carrying a knife to defend yourself . . . much witty, well-observed detail'
-- Glasgow Herald

Review

'Much more than a morality tale about the danger of carrying a knife to defend yourself ... much witty, well-observed detail' Glasgow Herald 'An uncompromising exploration of the ruthless Darwinian world of teenagers. It's tough, rough-textured and assured, cynical where it needs to be, and demands respect' Financial Times 'Bleakly humorous, imbuing a difficult subject matter with warmth, intelligence and compassion' Big Issue 'It's very rare, and exciting, to find a writer like Gillian Philip ... [Crossing the Line is] a tender, touching and emotionally savvy examination of sibling relationships and adolescent angst' The List (Glasgow and Edinburgh)

This is a wonderful book, multi-layered and involving. Despite the seriousness of its subject - the fall-out of the killing of one boy by another - there's humour in it too, and love, both the romantic variety and the kind found within families whose members care desperately for each other.

Nick Geddes doesn't see himself as a hero, but he is, struggling to find his way through it all, and trying to make things come right for everyone else before he thinks of himself.

This is a wonderful book from a writer of enormous talent, warmth and humanity.

Gillian Philip has created a gripping read which deals with the very real dangers of knife crime, showing how easily it can all go wrong, and the devastating consequences it brings. She writes with a strong and compelling voice which results in powerful characterisation. And she has created in Nick a believable and identifiable character, whom you can help but relate to in all his moments and through all his emotions.
Crossing the Line is strong story, interwoven with drama as well as humour, it is well told and richly evocative.
If you are a fan of Kevin Brooks or Meg Rosoff, read this.

Realistic & Original. 2 April 2009
By Jenny, Wondrous Reads TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
Crossing the Line is a chilling read that touches on several themes and issues that are relevant in today's society.

Knife crime is something that is steadily getting more common, especially in the UK. It's frightening and shocking, and, unfortunately, hard to stop. To write about such a contemporary problem is what I liked most about this book, as it addresses a subject that currently affects a lot of people.

The story is told from Nick's perspective, and covers the time before and after the stabbing that cost Aidan Mahon his life. The alternating time frames was a brilliant idea, as we get to see the events which led to the crime, as well as the aftermath.

All the characters were easy to identify with, especially siblings Allie and Nick. They were both experiencing guilt in one way or another, and were both dealing with Aidan's death in very different ways. Their relationship was a brilliant part of the book, and really highlighted the importance of family, and how much we rely on them to keep us safe. To some degree, I even understood Kev, and his motives for killing Aidan. Family pressure and the desire to be seen as tough or untouchable can take a toll on people more than they realise, and this is something that was explored through the characters of Kev and his brother Mickey.

I also have to mention the cover of the book, which is clever and extremely eye-catching. The train is quite important to the story, and I love how the image printed in red represents blood on the blade of a knife. It's simple, yet manages to say so much.

Gillian Philip has written a book that should appeal to fans of Kevin Brooks and Rachel Ward, or to anyone who likes their fiction to be realistic and believable.
