Product Description

Product Description

Two women meet by accident at a party - both mothers, both a similar age. But one is Israeli, the other Palestinian. So divided by fear and hatred are their two countries, they realise they will never be able to visit one another at home, despite living less than 100km apart. So, they begin to exchange letters. As their friendship grows they discuss not only their families, childcare and recipes, but also the wars and ethnic tensions that have shaped their lives. Their exchange is fraught with challenge, but also a sincere desire on each side to understand the thinking and grievances of the other. This is a moving and illuminating exchange of ideas at once accessible and profound, personal and political - and a beacon of hope in the wilderness of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. Crossing Qalandiya inspired the officially approved PEN initiative, Writers for Peace, which kicks off in Israel/Palestine in 2010.

BRIDGE-BUILDING 25 Jun 2010
By Alex
Format:Paperback
This is a fascinating book: I have enjoyed reading it and we are recommending it to all our friends , and any thinking person concerned about the lack of contact and understanding between Israelis and Palestinians.
So many of us have no idea how women on the other side live, think
and react to the daily round of tensions, half-sided information or mis-information. This correspondence between a young Palestinian and Israeli woman is refreshingly honest, dealing with each other's different lifestyle and world-view in a tactful but open manner.
As a great believer in women's ability to build bridges, we believe that if more people would find a way to make person-to-person contact and get to know each other it might make a difference !
Thank you Daniella and Shireen for showing us the way !

By Sarah A. Brown VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
I learnt of this book through my involvement with Children of Peace, as some of the proceeds from `Crossing Qalandiya' will go to this charity. Shireen Anabtawi, a Palestinian from Ramallah, and Daniela Norris, an Israeli, were introduced to each other by a mutual friend at a party in Geneva. Despite initial uncertainties, a strong friendship grew up between the two women. However they realized they would have difficulty meeting back home, so decided to write to each other in order to keep in touch. Their letters are reprinted in `Crossing Qalandiya'.

I found this book fascinating and compelling - both writers ask each other very challenging questions, making the reader turn the pages eagerly to find out how the other would respond. Both women are honest and indeed critical in their letters, yet self-critical too. Each wants the other to understand her own point of view, and both try to appreciate the other side's perspective. The mixture of political/historical analysis and personal, everyday detail was fascinating - the book manages to be subtle and sophisticated, yet highly accessible. I strongly recommend `Crossing Qalandiya' to anyone who is interested in finding out more about the lives of people affected by this conflict.
