Product Description

Set in the 1870s, this is the story of an impossible love between a half-Chinese woman, Mai, and Henry, a young immigrant from the UK who has come to the South Island of New Zealand in search of his sister. She is now living in Charleston, married to a local doctor, to whom Mai takes her grandfather for eye surgery. With family ties, racial prejudice and the local community conspiring against any match between Henry and Mai, their futures promise to be bleak. But perhaps Mai's grandfather is not the only one destined to see more clearly . . . This absorbing novel vividly recreates the time and place, providing a thoroughly entertaining read.

She's had short stories published in the New Zealand Woman's Weekly, and the Australian New Idea, also articles published locally. She has published two earlier novels, Mecca's Gold and Cross the River to Home.

I enjoy reading about New Zealand and this historical novel sounded ideal. However I was unable to get past the first 30 pages, due to the simplistic writing style and general lack of believability of the writing.
There are too many excellent novels out there to waste time on ones like this.
I am very surprised at the 5 stars given by the other reviewers, who seem to have dropped in from the Antipodes purely to review this book!! Update - And even more surprised to see that two readers from NZ, dropped in on the same day, shortly after my review, to provide more 5 star reviews!!!

Best read for 2005 27 Dec 2004

Kaye Kelly has written an unputdownable book about life in New Zealand in the 1800s. The vividness of the way they lived and depiction of the scenery is breathtaking. You are not reading the book you are living it!

You are swept into a story of the love between Mai a half-Chinese woman and Henry, an Englishman and racial prejudice of the local people of South Island. You feel their frustrations and fears, their hopes and desires. Your heart bleeds for Mai and her loyalty to her grandfather, her forced marriage to a man who uses and abuses her, her love for Henry that she keeps secret. And you will cheer on Henry, strong and determined to have the woman he loves at any cost.

Ms Kelly will make you laugh and cry and not once want to put down Cross The River to Home until its shattering ending.

I look forward to Ms Kelly's next book with eager anticipation.

I guarantee that Cross The River to Home will be the best book you will read this year -- or any year for that matter. It's a winner.

Kaye Kelly's Cross the River to Home is not your average love story. It is the poignant tale of love between an Englishman, Henry and a Chinese woman, Mai, and the hurdles they try to overcome. In the 1800s in New Zealand, racial prejudice is rife, but it's not only the local public opinion that they must face, for family honour comes first in a Chinese family and a forbidden love such as this is destined to fail. Ms Kelly writes a story that is accurate in historical detail, yet fast paced and an easy read. The story is enchanting, heart warming, moving and touching. I eagerly await her next novel.
