Product Description

The bestselling comic-book writer of "Authority and Transmetropolitan" brings his trippy and fast-paced style to the publishing world with his first detective novel. A burned-out private detective is enlisted by an army of presidential goons to retrieve the U.S. Constitution...the real one. Following in the steps of Neil Gaiman, "Crooked Little Vein" is packed with action, adventure, and a wild cast of characters that are sure to appease not only hardcore comic fans, but a whole new slew of mystery readers waiting for a surprisingly surreal treat that infuses the madness of the graphic-novel world.

About the Author

Warren Ellis is a bestselling comic-book writer for DC Comics. He has produced two of its most popular series: The Authority and Transmetropolitan. He's also worked on everything from Wolverine to Batman, and has been hailed as a genius by other recent uber-creators such as Alan Moore and Joss Whedon. This is his first novel. He lives in south east England with his partner Niki and their daughter Lilith.

Format:Paperback
An excellent, albeit short, novel as Mike McGill is tasked by the White House to find a secret constitution whiste supernatural powers.
Genuinely funny, it reads much like a Graphic Novel without p[ictures. It reminds me very much of Preacher by Garth Ennis. Journeying from city to city and state to state, McGill encounters depraved elements wherever he goes. Deviants, junkies and the nicest serial killer in the world all make an appearance in a road trip which encourages you not to make assumptions about others - nor to take them for granted.

As another reviewer has said, it didn't particularly shock me - probably saying more about me than anything - although there certainly is scope for that to occur.

Well wriiten, with brief yet incredibly real characters, I highly recommend it!

Strange and fun. 31 Oct 2008
Format:Paperback
Not quite as depraved as some reviews would have you believe, unless I have become a little jaded by exposure to the Internet. Which I suppose is the exact point the book is trying to make.
Genuinely funny tale from start to finish featuring a burnt out P.I. a love story, conspiracies, reptile love, saline infused ball bags, a bizarre plot and a background of depraved sickos.
It is funny, honest.

Warren Ellis is best know for his comics work, but he has finally managed to produce his first novel. The story centres around a private detective, Mike McGill, who is hired by the US Government to find the "other" Constitution of the United States of America - this contitution is a mystical document capable of resetting the morality of anyone who hears it being read to that of the founding fathers.

So Mike gets hired, he then has to trawl the sexual underground of the US to follow the trail that this document has left in its wake. If you have followed Warrenellis.com (or diepunyhumas.com prior to that) then you know where Warren's reseach interests lie. Expect to see lots of things from modblog (a body modification blog), dark sexual undercurrents and Godzilla Bukkake!!! All of this makes the book sound completely dark, but it is the most insanely funny wok of fiction I have read this year - my wife did ask what was so funny about it, but I didn't have the heart to tell her about the saline testicle injections (remember ignorance is bliss).

It is superb - 10/10

Painfully funny at times
I thought I knew what I was getting into with this book, a thriller with some dark humour thrown in, with a pretty dismal-sounding title that made me assume it would be a bit of a... Read more

Physical adventurism doesn't automatically make you a freak
This is a twisty little novel. I should hold my hand up and say that I think Mr Ellis has a great brain for writing, and fits an intriguing little niche of off-the-wall, blackly... Read more

Don't let your wife or servants read this book.
This is appalling meretricious trash and Mr Ellis should be thoroughly ashamed of himself. By pretending his protagonist has an elevated moral sense, he uses this as an excuse for... Read more

I had great expectations of this novel - maybe they were too high? Because the reading didn't last long enough, being quite a short book it was over in almost an instant. Read more
