I was given this as a present as a fan of horror and I really was not sure what to expect. I wouldn't say it was horrific and it does take a while to get going and the pace is not full steam by any stretch, but I really enjoyed this for it's depth and non reliance on gore to tell a story which really stays with you. You will recognise one of the main actors in it from Hellboy (Ron Perlman), clearly impressed Guillermo with his acting in this film. The plot is a nice twist on the original vampire story and the device and idea behind it is fantastic. I won't say too much as it would spoil the film for you, but it's well worth it and builds nicely. Gets you jumping in just the right spots. The acting is pretty good and the film gives me the impression it is set in the 1980's, even down to the credits style at the start and the score in it. I did think it would be in spanish for some reason with subtitles but it wasn't. This had no effect either way, but I do appreciate a good horror. Effected me in the same way as Let The Right One In [DVD] [2008] (the original) and the device made me think back to Hellraiser [1987] [DVD] a bit. All in all a great film with an interesting twist at the end. Don't be put off by the pace, it's just right, but be patient and you will be rewarded.

I would not say that this is strictly for Horror fans in a similar way to 'Let the right one in' wasn't. Horror fans should not expect too much in the way of gore, it's more about the device and the story. So when I say Hellraiser, i merely mean the device, not the gore aspect, just to clarify. :)

Oh and just one other point to make. The DVD front cover scene is not featured in this film at all. Merely for effect. :) Unless there was an extra on the DVD I missed. Actually I will check out the extra's tonight to see if there is any. Will update tomorrow.

Quite a dated film now (in 2011) but a great horror spectacle from the great Guillermo del Toro. This was his first film and a taste of things to come for the Spanish genius. As expected with GdT it has a solid story, a good cast and plenty of sinister and dark power elements in this horror based drama tale.

Cronos is about an old Antique dealer who finds a special insect shaped object inside a statue he receives. The piece (shaped like a scorpion with an insect inside it) injects the man, slowly transforming him into a Vampire. He is then a slave to the device as his family suffer seeing him change. All of this happens whilst a dying millionaire (and his henchman Ron Perlman) search for this desired artefact.

A great 90's horror-drama with the GdT sprinkling of magic throughout. GdT combines compelling stories with top-notch acting and a handful of suspenseful and dark moments.

Cronos is written and directed by Guillermo del Toro and stars Federico Luppi, Ron Perlman, Claudio Brook and Margarita Isabel. Music is by Javier Álvarez and cinematography by Guillermo Navarro. Plot finds Luppi as aged antique dealer Jesús Gris, who finds a weird scarab like mechanical device in the bottom of a statue now in his possession. It's an item of some importance, especially to a rich dying business man and his thug nephew. But once the scarab unfurls itself and becomes at one with Jesús, there's no going back, nothing will ever be the same again.

A unique debut feature from Mexican filmmaker del Toro that riffs on the Vampire formula whilst dabbling in grue and darkly comic values. While it's hardly the near masterpiece some 90s critics proclaimed it as, it's a hugely enjoyable film if taken as a pulpy fun horror picture. Toro plays on the fear of insects and the fear of death itself and then cloaks his film with Gothic mysticism; adding in some eye catching images as he goes. The cast are fine, Luppi is supremely cool and unflustered, while Perlman does a good thug portrayal as "nose job in waiting" Angel. The sound department also come up trumps, while Navarro's photography lends an ethereal beauty to proceedings.

Good, solid and interesting in the main, with flashes of greatness dotted along the way. 7/10

Eternity is a long time...
I hate dismissing a film without giving reasons why (I think it's lazy) but I have to confess that 'Cronos' managed to stupefy my critical facilities completely. Read more

Dated, but a solid sign of the greatness to come!
'Cronos' is a good film for Del Torro fans who, like me, wanted to see where it all started.

Make no mistake, this film is not great at all and with getting on for 20... Read more

WEIRD
Bought this for my husband but it wasn't to his taste. Someone recommended it to him but he found it too weird. I'm sure there are other people who would like it.

Did people who gave it low ratings see the same film????
I thought Cronos was absolutely brilliant. A completely unique take on vampirism, heavily involved with alchemy. The plot is unique and unpredictable, the effects likewise. Read more
