This was my 3rd slow-cooker: the original was very good, but eventually got broken, and I replaced it last year with a Cuisinart Cook and Hold. Yes, the Cuisinart is nice and big - but it didn't actually seem to be that slow, and when left on overnight food seemed to burn around the sides of the dish. Also, I had (wrongly!) assumed that it was common practice to reheat prepared dishes in the oven, as I had with my previous slow-cooker - and so without checking the instructions, put the removable dish straight into the oven one day. Ooops! The knob on the lid melted!

So - what with burned food and melted plastic, I gave up slow-cooking for a while, until I bought the Rival on impulse last week. And what a great buy it has turned out to be! We have used it 3 times in less than a week, and the food is delicious! Tender and succulent meat, great flavours, absolutely NO burning, and the dish can not only be placed in the oven and dishwasher, but also used on the hob. Fantastic!

The recipe book that comes with it is rather small, but probably gives you enough ideas to adapt your own recipes - and there are plenty of other slow-cooker books out there if want more. One other interesting point is that many of the recipes also have a 'fast' and 'slow' cooking settings, which gives you the option to either leave on overnight on 'slow' (cooking time say 10-12 hours), or to prepare a meal for the same day in a shorter time on 'fast' (with a cooking time of maybe 4-5 hours).

What an excellent slow-cooker!

Too fast for slow! 1 Feb 2008

Plus points: Great casseroles and soups so far. Have successfully used the pot on the hob and in the oven, as well of course in the slow-cooker base.

Minus points: Can't see how food is cooking because lid not glass. No timer for quite an expensive bit of kit. And most of all - it's a fast cooker! Stuff boils merrily away on the low setting which (with watts gadget checker) consumes 180 watts. On high it's 200-210 watts.

In future I'll use what it calls 'warm' setting. This, the instructions warn should be only for keeping food warm. But, using 60 watts, this is my idea of slow overnight cooking.

I bought this slow cooker, having looked at the reviews. I liked the look of this one the best, and liked the fact that the cooking pot was so versatile. I did read another review which suggested the pot wasnt large enough, but I find the opposite. The pot can easily feed 4 to 5 people as it says...easily...I've had the machine a week and used it 4 times..My husband objected to chicken with marrow supreme..but I liked it, and he's liked everything else. I've just gone back to work, and was unsure about a loow cooker, as I once tried one years ago, disastrously. This has 3 heat settings, and is great. Today I'm making a lamb curry, and it smells great. The recipe book that came with it, was far too, well I just wouldnt cook any of the recipes. It also came with an instruction book, with 3 extra recipes, one of which I've adapted. At the moment I'm making old favourites. I've bought another recipe book on line, which is also slightly adventureous, but I can adapt these.
I defrost the meat in the microwave, brown in the cooking pot, add the rest of the ingredients, and leave...excellent...We've tried not to make soups so far, as the weather is hot, and have managed to make some healthy options with chicken and vegetables. I'm very pleased I bought it, and it hasnt been put away once. Its stylish enough to sit in view.
