I have crocheted all my life. Until I received this book, I never ventured further than the basic stitches or trims. With it's clear illustrations and easy to follow instructions, I've been able to venture further than my normal "basic" crochet and become creative. I now combine it in many of my pieces: both in sewing and knitting, and even got brave and crocheted my first full vest. The book features finishing techniques and instructions for multi-color crochet, filet crochet, Irish Crochet, Bead crochet, motifs, granny squares, tassels, trims and edgings just to name a few. The sections on definitions and symbols are beautifully done. And there is a wonderful chart on comparative hook sizes in US, UK and metric sizes. The book explains yarn sizes and substitutions in an easy to understand manner, as well. There are also many Hints & Tips scattered throughout the book that help add lots of *inspiration*. In my humble opinion, this 6th book in the Companion series is one any fiber worker should not be without. And it's a great size to pop into your bag and take along with your project.

This book is so very useful. It has many different techniques such as buttonhole making, bead crochet, blocking, and making gauge swatches. All of the basic stiches are included such as single crochet as are more decorative techniques like making braids, edgings, or cords.
This book is small and spiral, so you can carry it with you if you're working on an unfamiliar project and then flip to the page you need as a reference.
You'll use this book.

Although this jam-packed little volume is small enough to slip in your knitting/crochet basket, it holds enough information to rival larger books. Practical tools and suggestions fill the book as well as illustrations that are easy to understand (for me and I've been crocheting a long time). In case you forget the difference between the double crochet and the half-double crochet, the book includes example of those and other basic stitches as well as more ornate procedures such as making a popcorn stitch. One set of pages covers making Granny squares including `Granny square triangles' and other forms of the popular pattern. The book is printed in black and white and may not appeal to those who are color dependent. The pages are heavy with clear plastic surfaces which makes them easy to clean and long wearing, but hard to flip through if you are looking for something specific. I find THE CROCHETER'S COMPANION useful for travel, but have better books for home use.
