Product Description

Review

"Good old Sunflowers, those thin blue books that walkers trust like seasoned friends from Sicily to the Azores--they never fail to find you a really good walk."

Product Description

From the northernmost shores of the Kvarner Gulf, southwards all the way to Dubrovnik, this walking and touring guide covers Croatia's Adriatic coast, eleven of the myriad islands and two inland areas. It includes the Mljet, Plitvice Lakes, Krka and Paklenica national parks and Biokovo and Ucka nature parks, and mentions five of Croatia's six World Heritage sites. Happily, these bald though impressive facts describe one of the most beautiful and beguiling countries in Europe. Contrasts and diversity sum up Croatia: tall forests, wind-combed prickly thornbush and juniper on the stony uplands, the miraculous waterfalls in the Plitvice Lakes and Krka national parks, the aridity of the karst landscapes, modern tourist resorts and timeless old villages, the deserted Krajina region and the intensively cultivated Neretva delta.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not the best, but still good, 11 Oct 2009

I am a huge fan of the Sunflower books and regard a holiday as being incomplete without one. However, there seems to be something "missing" in this Croatia guide.
For a start, if you are based in Istria on the west coast , as a lot of holiday makers will be,there are no walks nearby.
Two thirds of the walks are on the islands, and unless you are having a touring or camping holiday this would necessitate many ferry crossings with your vehicle.
We tried a couple of the walks, but even in September it was too hot. Early or late in the year would be better, but then the ferries are not so frequent.
My advice would be to do the walks in the 2 national Parks, and stick to the car tours for the other regions.
The pull of the Adriatic was greater than the desire to walk!.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good walking guide for the Dalmatian coast and Plitvice, 30 July 2009

We used this guide, together with Walking in Croatia by Rudolf Abraham, for a walking holiday in Croatia. We followed the excellent walks from this guide on the island of Rab and in the Paklenica and Plitvice Lakes National Parks. These, together with walks higher up in the North Velebit Mountains, provided a variety of beautiful Spring scenery.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 18 April 2009

I used this guide in 2008 for day-trips by boat from Dubrovnik. Basic ferry information is included in the book, and at least four islands are easily accessible from this city. I could select from walk 1-6, and this was more than enough for my relatively short stay. Judged by these walks the book is very good and walk descriptions are of high quality. In addition there are good maps so you cannot go very wrong with this as your guide! I am really looking forward to do more of these island walks in the future, and both the book and the Croatian islands have my warmest recommendations.
