Product Description

Review

When teaching for the OCR AS-level course I found this an ideal book - the right depth for teachers and the right length for students. It is written with such obvious enthusiasm for lucid and practical thinking that it can be recommended to teachers and students in any field. --Roger Sutcliffe, Chairman, Sapere

A really useful introduction to developing and improving a core skill --Association of Commonwealth Universities

I love Roy van den Brink-Budgen's work. I used to teach AS Critical Thinking, and used the first edition of this book as the main text for my students. This 4th edition is even better - providing a wonderfully accessible guide for anyone wanting to improve their critical thinking (understanding reasoning and argument) - be they student or adult. Highly recommended.

I got this book for the BMAT (medical school admissions test). It was a good book to work through and better than the other critical thinking books I looked at. The only problems I had with it were a) the author's personal opinions- I don't know what they think they are adding to their book by slating other books?! and b) the lack of practice questions in it. However it is easy to follow and well organised, so I would recommend it.

A really well set out book that takes a very organised and practical look at the nuts and bolts of critical thinking. Although this book is academically rigorous it breaks the parts of critical thinking down in a very elegant way. You won't want to read it one go as the chapters although short are very dense in terms of meaning and you will want to start using the elements described.

What a disappointment. The author spends so much time on the minutae of giving examples, you forget the point he made two pages previously. Very badly written. Also, I'm not impressed by the way he uses his book to slag off other authors of the same topic. Not good form.
Do yourself a favour and spend your money elsewhere. I wish I had.

Great resource 28 Nov 2011

Great resource to develop critical thinking skills quickly. This book is short (about 100 pages), concise, has examples to facilitate the understanding of the materials. Chapter 10 sums up some good points on how to produce a good argument (coherence, consistence, significance of the claims).

Just what I was looking for 17 Dec 2012

I needed a clear, concise and thoughtful text on critical thinking and assessment. This book fit the bill. It was well laid-out and addressed the issues I wanted to assess very effectively.

The book kind of reads like a pamphlet for a seminar on critical thinking. The more I read it, the more I felt like I was supposed to be looking over a syllabus and admitting that the first day of a college class is almost always a waste of time. I bought this book as a reference to help my ESL writing students develop their critical thinking skills so they could write more logically and coherently, and didn't use it once with them in the end. Instead I just give them logic grid puzzles which they like better. At least it was pretty cheap though.
