Product Description

Product Description
In a world where violence, accidents and disasters are on the increase, more and more people are becoming involved in traumatic incidents which may develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and require treatment. The technique of Critical Incident Debriefing has been devised to help victims of trauma, enabling them to work through the experience and come to terms with it. This practical book describes how our understanding of stress, post-traumatic stress (PTSD) have deepened and looks at the treatment techniques developed to help. It provides a detailed discussion of defusing techniques developed in the USA and Norway and the methods of Critical Incident Debriefing. A major section covers the revised three-stage model step by step, with illustrations of its practical use. All professionals whose work involves helping who have had traumatic experiences will find the book invaluable, and it will be especially useful to those in the emergency services, as well as aid agencies, Victim Support and counselling organisations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Aims of the book., 30 May 2001
By fwparkinson@hotmail.com (Longcot, Oxfordshire) - See all my reviews
This practical book outlines in detail the possible reactions to traumatic events and offers some understanding of how and why they might develop. It then gives details of methods of helping, their historical development and theoretical background, especially of Simple Defusing techniques and the method known as Critical Incident (or Psychological) Debriefing used with victims and helpers after traumatic events.

3.0 out of 5 stars CISD comes across clearly, 27 Mar 2004
By David (Morriston, Wales, UK) - See all my reviews
Having read this book I immediately recognised the content is not new. Much content is exactly as in the Operations Manual for the Prevention of Traumatic Stress Among Emergency Services and Disaster Workers by Jeff Mitchell and George Everly. Frank has added case notes where personally involved, this to assist readers who have never undertaken a CISD course. The book is an assett for all having undertaken CISD to have it a as a resource to remind them of the 7 phase and 3 phase models. An interesting read none the less.
