Product Description

From the Back Cover

Bringing together papers written by Norman Fairclough over a 25 year period, Critical Discourse Analysis represents a comprehensive and important contribution to the development of this popular field.

The book is divided into seven sections covering the following themes:

  • language in relation to ideology and power
  • discourse in processes of social and cultural change
  • dialectics of discourse, dialectical relations between discourse and other moments of social life
  • methodology of critical discourse analysis research
  • analysis of political discourse
  • discourse in globalisation and ‘transition’
  • critical language awareness in education

The new edition has been extensively revised and enlarged to include a total of twenty two papers. It will be of value to researchers in the subject and should prove essential reading for advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students in Linguistics and other areas of social science.

Norman Fairclough is Emeritus Professor at Lancaster University.

The future of discourse analysis and linguistics 6 Dec. 1996
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This book paves the way for a more socially-oriented and emancipatory discourse analysis, and linguistics in general. By incorporating analyses of discourse and social practices in language studies, Norman Fairclough succeeds in advancing the idea of language as a site of constant and dynamic struggles of people in society. This book shows us: first, how language both shapes and is shaped by society; second, how language in specific contexts can be designed and redesigned by contemporary discourse technologists to market people and products; and third, how language can satisfactorily be reshaped to change society towards emancipation and democracy. Read this book to understand aspects of contemporary society.

This book paves the way for language studies in the 20th century.

Helpful but redundant 6 Mar. 2013
By Tiger Chan - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
Fairclough provides a very thorough framework for using CDA that I found helpful with my own research. However after the first few chapters, the book gets rather redundant.
For a nice rounded overview of CDA, I would strongly suggest Blommaert's "Discourse: Key topics in sociolinguistics." If I had a choice, I would have purchased Blommaert's book, and pulled articles from Fairclough's work. Fairclough's paper, "Critical discourse analysis and the marketization of public discourse" (available free through Google Scholar) will give you a taste of Fairclough's particular approach to CDA, and you can decide from there whether or not you would like to purchase the book.
Overly Verbose & Very British 20 Mar. 2014
By Brandy Judkins - Published on Amazon.com

Fairclough is certainly an expert in the field; however, this text is hard to wade through given the sheer wordiness throughout and the high frequency of off-the-cuff British culture connections that might not be familiar to non-Brits (like myself).
