5.0 out of 5 stars A visually stunning masterpiece. 7 Oct 2001
By Alan Pavelin VINE™ VOICE
Format:VHS Tape
A stunning masterpiece from Japanese master Mizoguchi, set in a feudal Japan run by gangs of warlords. A simple but ambitious potter is led astray by ghosts, repenting only when he returns to "reality". Visually breathtaking, with a wonderful "special effect" near the end requiring no trickery or computer animation whatever! My only slight quibble is that the film is basically two stories, concerning the potter and his brother-in-law, which don't dovetail completely naturally. But still 4.9 stars out of 5!

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning 7 May 2012
Format:Blu-ray|Amazon Verified Purchase
One of the best movies I have ever seen. The story is very simple but it is superb. The themes are an interesting mix of the universal, and particular to Japanese culture. Even in black and white some of the visuals are close to stunning (but at the same time this is an old movie and its condition is not perfect). It is a very powerful story.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great film - poor transfer 30 Dec 2012
Format:Blu-ray
Having just watched this excellent film on the Eureka Blu-Ray edition boasting 'Newly restored Hi-Def transfer', I was surprised they even bothered wasting a BluRay disc at all and simply kept with a DVD issue. The transfer is appalling and there is no visual evidence of restoration - if anything the BluRay highlights the inadequacies of the scratched print.
Either wait for the next reissue when they have bothered cleaning up the source print, or buy the Criterion edition.
It's an interesting and well made film although don't expect the ghost story element to be to the fore. For a scarier Japanese horror experience, get Onibaba or Kwaidan.
