5.0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece but not a film for everybody 22 Dec 2008
Format:DVD
This famous Swedish art film is all about different dimensions of freedom: political, artistic and sexual. The background reading is Herbert Marcuse's Eros and Civilization, the Magna Charta of the 1968 student revolution in Paris. Marcuse considered sexual freedom as the precondition for building a (new) humane society. Vilgot Sjoman seems to disagree with Marcuse: sexuality itself is expressed in possessiveness which is in conflict with the social and political programme of the radical left. There is also a significant feminist element in the film.
It's an art film that makes one think. Don't try to watch it for entertainment, as there is none.

This DVD is long-overdue: ever since the video wentout of print, we have missed this excellent and amusing introduction to Sweden (and much of Europe) of the 1960s.Although known, in the US, for its "blue" parts, the sex is incidental: what this gives is a sometimes bitter, often laughter-rich, commentary on being a young Swedish woman in the activist and exploratory (and sexist) 60s. Sophisticated and "true to life", this is a much better way of getting a feeling for the 1960s than any of those nostalgic / dismissive modern films. It is, incidentally, also an excellent film: very good acting, fun photography, interesting story, and new type of format (funny political satire interwoven with striking feminist critique). And there is, of course, also the sex: well done, that also, non-gratuitous and very believable.

4.0 out of 5 stars thoughtful and original film 5 Feb 2011
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this film particularly because I thought it would have a high erotic content. However I found that this was not really the case although sexual relationships are a big part of it. The main protagonist a young woman called Lena finds only bondage in love and questions her country's (Sweden's) attitudes to equality (both economic and of the sexes) and spends a fair amount of time canvassing people's opinions. Her relationship with a money orientated car salesman throws these issues into relief, especially when she escapes to the country for a retreat, and he follows on on behind. The film contains many interesting and original techniques - it is a film within a film - and relates the political concerns of the time (the late sixties). Well acted I thought, particularly the female lead who plays her role with conviction and a lot of passion (who knew the Swedes could be so fiery?). Worth a watch.
