Crisis in the Middle East: Israel and the Arab States 1945-2007
This book is a brand new title in the Access to History series which explores and analyses the history of conflict in the Middle East from British rule in the early twentieth century to the Iraq war in the twenty-first century. The Arab-Israeli conflict is the main focus of this book but it also examines:
* Arab nationalism, especially in Egypt and Syria
* the Islamic revolution in Iran in 1979
* the causes and consequences of three wars involving Iraq
* the growth of political Islam and Islamic fundamentalism in the Middle East.

Throughout the book, key dates, terms and issues are highlighted, and historical interpretations of key debates are outlined. Summary diagrams are included to consolidate knowledge and understanding of the period, and exam-style questions and tips written by examiners provide the opportunity to develop exam skills.

I used this book primarily for revision although my teacher also used extracts during the lessons with self produced worksheets to go with the book.

I found the summary diagrams very useful as they give a brief and concise overview of the chapter/topic. The layout is good & makes the book very reader friendly.

Using Teach Yourself the Middle East Since 1945 (TY History) for further detail & "reading around the subject" is also highly recommended.

This is an outstanding textbook. I use it as the basis of my teaching at IB level and the students find it accessible and clear. The writing is pitched at just the right level for the target audience and there is a liberal use of visual sources, stimulus questions and sourcework exercises throughout. If you're looking for just one book to teach the Standard Level IB course for this topic, this is your best choice. An important point: the title of the book states that it starts in 1945, but in fact there is plenty of information too about the period after 1914 which is useful for Higher Level students too.
