I was brought up a JW and lived the JW life through all my school years into my 30s.
I served as an elder.

For a number of months I had been doing some small scale research on the Watchtower organisation and started to have niggling doubts and concerns about the whole JW belief system - i did this while an elder so it was a difficult time. This book was recommended to me so I purchased it, which was risky in itself, ready such material for a JW is a disfellowshipping offense.

Right away I was impressed with Raymonds loving motives and honesty.
Initially this book was a heartbreaker - nearly everything I believed was collapsing before my eyes.
In particular - the exposing of the JW leadership - the Governing Body - was distressing. But ultimately helped me to detach my mind from the JW thinking.

I resigned as an elder, stopped attending meetings - 6 months later my wife stopped as well. We both truly feel the freedom of escaping!!

We are both christians, still have a firm belief in God and trust the bibles hope for the future.
We will always be grateful for Raymond writing this book.
I notice 1 or 2 have given this book a low rating - oh I bet they have'nt even read it!

My recommendation to any active JWs reading this is - give this book a chance - perhaps your experience will be the same as mine -

A truly eye opening account of one the world's fastest growing cults-as seen and told from someone who was on the "inside". A nicely detailed read of what goes on behind the doors of organized religion: Networks of spies, a plethora of scandals, financial matters, secret meetings, doctrinal changes and manipulation of Sacred Scripture, departmental gossip, certain members receiving special treatment, etc, etc, etc. The list goes on and on. Ray Franz gained nothing from writing this book. He has lost all his friends, he has no real money to speak of, and no longer associates with ANY Christian sect. In conclusion, I must say that "Crisis of Conscience" is an account which should be seen and heard by EVERYONE, and especially Jehovah's Witnesses-the few who dare read it.

mr. franz uses personal experience and cites factual j.w. literature to expose this organization for what it really is... a cult. one only has to look at all the false prophecies concerning the j.w. version of armageddon and the dates they give...1874, 1914, 1915, 1918, 1920, 1925 and 1975. check their new literature for an updated version of the end of the world. how easily they overlook the bible scripture in deut. 18:22 that tells us is a prohet is wrong one time, he is not a prophet, mr. franz gives added ammunition to anyone that wishes to defend themselves from spiritually threatening cults.
